||

| multidrug resistance | The insensitivity of various tumours to a variety of chemically related anticancer drugs; mediated by a process of inactivating the drug or removing it from the target tumour cells. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| multidrug transporter | Closely related family (ABC transporters) of integral membrane glycoproteins that export a variety of solutes from the cytoplasm. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tuberculosis, multidrug-resistant | Tuberculosis resistant to chemotherapy with two or more antitubercular agents. The problem of resistance is particularly troublesome in tuberculosis as an opportunistic disease in HIV infection. (12 Dec 1998) |
| gene family | <molecular biology> A set of genes coding for diverse proteins which, by virtue of their high degree of sequence similarity, are believed to have evolved from a single ancestral gene. An example is the immunoglobulin family where the characteristic features of the constant domains are found in various cell surface receptors. (18 Nov 1997) |
| antibiotic resistance gene | Genes in a microorganism which confer resistance to antibiotics, for example by coding for enzymes which destroy it, by coding for surface proteins which prevent it from entering the microorganism, or by being a mutant form of the antibiotic's target so that it can ignore it. (09 Oct 1997) |

| colon cancer, family history of | Colorectal cancer can run in families. The colon cancer risk is higher if an immediate (first-degree) family member (parents, siblings or children) had colorectal cancer and even higher if more than one such relative had colorectal cancer or if a family member developed the cancer at young age (younger than 55 years). Under any of these circumstances, individuals are recommended to undergo a colonoscopy every three years starting at an age that is 7-10 years younger than when the youngest family member with the cancer wasdiagnosed. For example, if a parent had colon cancer diagnosed at age 50, colonoscopy should start in that person's children at 40-43 years of age. (12 Dec 1998) |
| multigene family | <molecular biology> A set of genes coding for diverse proteins which, by virtue of their high degree of sequence similarity, are believed to have evolved from a single ancestral gene.
