| malignant teratoma | <oncology, tumour> A collection of cancerous cells which form cysts that contain one or more of the three primary embryonic germ layers: skin, hair or teeth. (27 Sep 1997) |
|---|---|
| sacrococcygeal teratoma | <tumour> Found in the region of the primitive pit and node. Most common tumour in the newborn period. Triphyllomatous teratoma, a teratoma composed of tissues derived from all three germ layers. Synonym: tridermoma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ovarian teratoma | See: Ovary, dermoid cyst of the. (12 Dec 1998) |
| teratoma | <oncology, tumour> Malignant tumour (teratoma) thought to originate from primordial germ cells or misplaced blastomeres that contains tissues derived from all three embryonic layers, such as bone, muscle, cartilage, nerve, tooth buds and various glands. Accompanied by undifferentiated, pluripotent epithelial cells known as embryonal carcinoma cells. (16 Dec 1997) |
| teratoma orbitae | Unequal conjoined twins in which the parasite, usually very imperfectly developed, is attached at an orbit of the autosite. See: conjoined twins. Synonym: teratoma orbitae. Origin: L. Orbita, orbit, + G. Pagos, something fixed (05 Mar 2000) |
| teratoma, ovarian | Tumour that develops from a totipotential germ cell (a primary oocyte) retained within the egg sac (ovary). Being totipotential, that cell can give rise to all orders of cells necessary to form mature tissues and often recognizable structures such as hair, bone and sebaceous (oily) material, neural tissue and teeth. These tumours may occur at any age but the prime age of detection is in the childbearing years. The average age is 30. Up to 15% of women with ovarian teratomas have them in both ovaries. The tumours can range in size from a centimeter (less than a half inch) up to 45 cm (17 inches) in diameter. They can cause the ovary to twist (torsion) and imperil its blood supply. Although the large majority (about 98%) of ovarian teratomas are benign, the remaining fraction (about 2%) becomes malignant. The larger the ovarian teratoma, the greater the risk of rupture with spillage of the greasy contents which can create problems with adhesions, pain etc. Removal is usually the treatment of choice by laparotomy (surgery) or laparoscopy (with a scope). Ovarian teratomas are also called dermoid cysts of the ovary and referred to simply as dermoids. (12 Dec 1998) |
| angiofollicular mediastinal lymph node hyperplasia | Solitary masses of lymphoid tissue containing concentric perivascular aggregates of lymphocytes, occurring usually in the mediastinum or hilar region of young adults; similar changes have been reported outside the mediastinum and, if associated with interfollicular sheets of plasma cells, may progress to lymphoma or plasmacytoma. Synonym: angiofollicular mediastinal lymph node hyperplasia, Castleman's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior mediastinal arteries | <anatomy, artery> Small twigs supplying anterior mediastinal structures: mainly thymus and lymph nodes. Synonym: rami mediastinales arteriae thoracicae internae, rami thymici, anterior mediastinal arteries, arteriae thymicae, thymic arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior mediastinal lymph nodes | Located in the superior mediastinum in relation to the great vessels, these nodes receive lymph from the thymus, pericardium and right side of the heart; their efferent vessels join those of the tracheal nodes to form the bronchomediastinal trunks. Synonym: nodi lymphatici mediastinales anteriores. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal | <anatomy> Of or pertaining to a mediastinum. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| mediastinal arteries | Branches distributed to the mediastinum. Synonym: rami mediastinales, arteriae mediastinales anteriores, mediastinal arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal branches | Branches distributed to the mediastinum. Synonym: rami mediastinales, arteriae mediastinales anteriores, mediastinal arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal branches of internal thoracic artery | <anatomy, artery> Small twigs supplying anterior mediastinal structures: mainly thymus and lymph nodes. Synonym: rami mediastinales arteriae thoracicae internae, rami thymici, anterior mediastinal arteries, arteriae thymicae, thymic arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal branches of thoracic aorta | Numerous small arteries supplying the pleura and lymph nodes of the posterior mediastinum. Synonym: rami mediastinales aortae thoracicae, posterior mediastinal arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal cyst | Cysts of one of the parts of the mediastinum: the superior part, containing the trachea, oesophagus, thoracic duct and thymus organs; the inferior middle part, containing the pericardium; the inferior anterior part containing some lymph nodes; and the inferior posterior part, containing the thoracic duct and oesophagus.
