superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis Inflammatory oedema of the superior corneoscleral limbus.
(05 Mar 2000)
isthmus of limbic lobe The narrowing of the cingulate gyrus, at its transition with the hippocampal gyrus behind and below the splenium of the corpus callosum, caused by the anterior extension of the conjoined parieto-occipital and calcarine sulci.
Synonym: isthmus gyri cinguli, isthmus of gyrus fornicatus, isthmus of limbic lobe.
(05 Mar 2000)
limbic <anatomy> Pertaining to a limbus or margin, forming a border around.
(18 Nov 1997)
limbic lobe As originally defined by P. Broca: the nearly closed ring of the brain structures surrounding the hilus, or margin, of the cerebral hemisphere of mammals; it is composed of the fornicate gyrus (cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus), the hippocampus, and the amygdala.
See: limbic system.
(05 Mar 2000)
limbic system Collective term denoting a heterogeneous array of brain structures at or near the edge (limbus) of the medial wall of the cerebral hemisphere, in particular the hippocampus, amygdala, and fornicate gyrus; the term is often used so as to include also the interconnections of these structures, as well as their connections with the septal area, the hypothalamus, and a medial zone of mesencephalic tegmentum. By way of the latter connections, the limbic system exerts an important influence upon the endocrine and autonomic motor system's; its functions also appear to affect motivational and mood states.
Synonym: visceral brain.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute haemorrhagic encephalitis Encephalitis of apoplectoid character due to blood extravasation.
Synonym: encephalitis haemorrhagica.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute inclusion body encephalitis The most common acute encephalitis, caused by HSV-1; affects persons of any age; preferentially involves the inferomedial portions of the temporal lobe and the orbital portions of the frontal lobes; pathologically, severe haemorrhagic necrosis is present along with, in the acute stages, intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons and glial cells.
Synonym: acute inclusion body encephalitis, herpes encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute necrotizing encephalitis An acute form of encephalitis, characterised by destruction of brain parenchyme.
(05 Mar 2000)
arthritis-encephalitis virus, caprine A species of lentivirus, subgenus ovine-caprine lentiviruses (lentiviruses, ovine-caprine), closely related to visna-maedi virus and causing acute encephalomyelitis, chronic arthritis, pneumonia, mastitis, and glomerulonephritis in goats. It is transmitted mainly in the colostrum and milk.
(12 Dec 1998)
Australian X encephalitis A severe encephalitis with a high mortality rate occurring in the Murray Valley of Australia; the disease is most severe in children and is characterised by headache, fever, malaise, drowsiness or convulsions, and rigidity of the neck; extensive brain damage may result; it is caused by the Murray Valley encephalitis virus (genus Flavivirus).
Synonym: Australian X disease, Australian X encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
bacterial encephalitis Encephalitis of bacterial aetiology.
Synonym: encephalitis pyogenica, purulent encephalitis, suppurative encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
bovine spongiform encephalitis <pathology> A neuro-degenerative disease found in domestic cattle which is related to a number of other similar diseases found in other animal species, including humans. The most well-known of these other diseases are scrapie, found in sheep, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, found in humans. The family of diseases is caused by an abnormally-configured protein called a prion. The function of the protein in its normal configuration is not certain. The diseases are similar to Alzheimer's disease in humans, except the progressive loss of brain function is more rapid.
(09 Oct 1997)
bunyavirus encephalitis Encephalitis of abrupt onset, with severe frontal headache and low-grade to moderate fever, caused by members of the genus Bunyavirus (Bunyaviridae family); infections also occur in rodents, lagomorphs, and domestic animals.
Synonym: California encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
California encephalitis Encephalitis of abrupt onset, with severe frontal headache and low-grade to moderate fever, caused by members of the genus Bunyavirus (Bunyaviridae family); infections also occur in rodents, lagomorphs, and domestic animals.
Synonym: California encephalitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
van Bogaert encephalitis <neurology> Chronic progressive illness seen in children a few years after measles infection and involving demyelination of the cerebral cortex. Virus apparently persists in brain cells: usually considered a slow virus disease.

  • Limbic Encephalitis - »õâ A paraneoplastic syndrome marked by degeneration of neurons in the medial temporal lobe. Clinical features include behavioral changes, HALLUCINATIONS, loss of short term memory, anosmia, AGEUSIA, and DEMENTIA. Circulating anti-neuronal antibodies (anti-Hu; also called ANNA 1) and small cell lung carcinomas are frequently associated with this condition. limbic encephalitis encephalitis of the limbic system of the rhinencephalon, a type similar to herpes encephalitis, characterized by degenerative changes of the hippocampus and amygdaloid nuclei with memory loss, confusion, seizures, and progressive dementia. There is sometimes an association with tumors elsewhere in the body, although some authorities speculate a link to chemotherapy or other tumor treatments.
