| lateral striate arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum. Synonym: arteriae centrales anterolaterales, arteriae thalamostriatae anterolaterales, anterolateral central arteries, anterolateral striate arteries, anterolateral thalamostriate arteries, arteries of cerebral haemorrhage, lenticulostriate arteries. | middle cerebral artery | <anatomy, artery> One of the two large terminal branches (with anterior cerebral artery) of the internal carotid artery; it passes laterally around the pole of the temporal lobe, then posteriorly in the depth of the lateral cerebral fissure; for descriptive purposes it is divided into three parts: 1) the sphenoidal part (M1 segment of clinical terminology), supplying perforating branches to the internal capsule, thalamus, and striate body; 2) the insular part, supplying branches to the insula and adjacent cortical areas; and 3) the terminal part or cortical part, supplying a large part of the central cortical convexity (the latter two collectively forming M2 segment). Synonym: arteria cerebri media. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plexus of middle cerebral artery | <anatomy, artery> An autonomic plexus accompanying the middle cerebral artery, derived from the internal carotid plexus. Synonym: plexus arteriae cerebri mediae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortical part of middle cerebral artery | <anatomy, artery> See: middle cerebral artery. Synonym: pars corticalis arteriae cerebralis mediae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sphenoidal part of middle cerebral artery | sphenoidal part of middle cerebral artery |
| insular part of middle cerebral artery | insular part of middle cerebral artery |
| medial striate artery | <anatomy, artery> Arises at or just distal to the anterior communicating artery; distribution: anterior caudate and putamen and anterior limb of internal capsule. Synonym: arteria centralis longa, arteria recurrens, artery of Heubner, long central artery, recurrent artery of Heubner, recurrent artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial middle cerebral vein | <anatomy, vein> A large vein passing along the line of the sylvian fissure to join the cavernous sinus; it communicates with the superior sagittal sinus and transverse sinus via the superior and inferior anastomotic veins, respectively. Synonym: vena cerebri media superficialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep middle cerebral vein | <anatomy, vein> The vein that accompanies the middle cerebral artery in the depths of the lateral sulcus and empties into the basal vein of Rosenthal. Synonym: vena cerebri media profunda. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral mammary branches of lateral thoracic artery | <anatomy, artery> Branches of the lateral thoracic artery which extend around the lateral borders of the pectoral muscles to supply the lateral aspect of the breast and mammary gland. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales arteriae thoracicae lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anastomotic branch of middle meningeal artery to lacrimal artery | <anatomy, artery> A branch of the middle meningeal artery arising in the cranial cavity which runs anteriorly through the superior orbital fissure to anastomose with the lacrimal artery. See: orbital branch of middle meningeal artery. Synonym: ramus anastomoticus arteriae meningeae mediae cum lacrimali. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterolateral striate arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum.
