| macula corneae | A moderately dense opacity of the cornea. Synonym: corneal spot. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| vertex corneae | The central part of the cornea, slightly thinner than the peripheral part. Synonym: vertex corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| herpes corneae | <ophthalmology, pathology> Inflammation of the cornea (and conjunctiva) due to herpes virus type I, a characteristic finding on physical examination of the eye (cornea) is a dendritic pattern (crystalline or tree-like pattern). (27 Sep 1997) |
| substantia propria corneae | Proper substance of cornea, modified transparent connective tissue, between the layers of which are open spaces or lacunae nearly filled with the corneal cells or corpuscles. Synonym: substantia propria corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ichthyosis corneae | An ocular complication of a congenital abnormality of the skin with corneal keratinization, dryness, and scaling. (05 Mar 2000) |
| epithelium anterius corneae | The stratified squamous epithelium covering the outer surface of the cornea; it is smooth, consists usually of five layers of cells, and contains numerous free nerve endings. Synonym: epithelium anterius corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies anterior corneae | The external surface of the cornea. Synonym: facies anterior corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies posterior corneae | The posterior surface of the cornea. Synonym: facies posterior corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina limitans anterior corneae | A transparent homogeneous acellular layer, 6 to 9 um thick, lying between the basal lamina of the outer layer of stratified epithelium and the substantia propria of the cornea; considered to be a basement membrane. Synonym: lamina limitans anterior corneae, anterior elastic layer, Bowman's membrane, lamina elastica anterior, limiting layers of cornea. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina limitans posterior corneae | A transparent homogeneous acellular layer between the substantia propria and the endothelial layer of the cornea; considered to be a highly developed basement membrane. Synonym: lamina limitans posterior corneae, membrana vitrea, Descemet's membrane, Duddell's membrane, entocornea, hyaloid membrane, lamina elastica posterior, limiting layers of cornea, membrana hyaloidea, posterior elastic layer, tunica vitrea, vitreous membrane. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limbus corneae | An annular transitional zone, approximately 1 mm wide, between the cornea and the bulbar conjunctiva and sclera. It is highly vascular and is involved in the metabolism of the cornea. It is ophthalmologically significant in that it appears on the outer surface of the eyeball as a slight furrow, marking the line between the clear cornea and the sclera. (12 Dec 1998) |
| linea corneae senilis | An opaque, grayish ring at the periphery of the cornea just within the sclerocorneal junction, of frequent occurrence in the aged; it results from a deposit of fatty granules in, or hyaline degeneration of, the lamellae and cells of the cornea. Synonym: anterior embryotoxon, arcus adiposus, arcus juvenilis, arcus lipoides, arcus senilis, gerontoxon, linea corneae senilis, lipoidosis corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lipoidosis corneae | An opaque, grayish ring at the periphery of the cornea just within the sclerocorneal junction, of frequent occurrence in the aged; it results from a deposit of fatty granules in, or hyaline degeneration of, the lamellae and cells of the cornea. Synonym: anterior embryotoxon, arcus adiposus, arcus juvenilis, arcus lipoides, arcus senilis, gerontoxon, linea corneae senilis, lipoidosis corneae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| actinic keratosis | <dermatology> A skin lesion that is abnormally sensitive to the effects of ultraviolet light (sunlight). Thought to be a precancerous skin lesion that is more common in the fair-skinned or elderly individual. Approximately 20% of these skin lesions will develop into squamous cell carcinoma. Prevention includes the use of sun screen agents and the avoidance of drugs (for example tetracyclines) known to cause photosensitivity reactions. Usually a discreet slightly raised, red or pink lesion located on a sun exposed surface. Texture may appear as rough, gritty or scaly. Growths may be biopsied to look for cancer or removed via cryotherapy or electrical cautery. Some topical agents may be used to promote peeling. (27 Sep 1997) |
| arsenical keratosis | Multiple keratoses, most commonly of the palms and soles but also of the fingers and proximal portions of the extremities, resulting from long-term arsenic ingestion; they resemble Bowen's disease microscopically and may become malignant. (05 Mar 2000) |
