| keratinosome |
one of the spherical granules that are formed in the upper spinous and granula layers of the skin near the Golgi apparatus and migrate into the cytoplasm, ultimately fusing with the plasma membrane to discharge their contents (bipolar phospholipids, glycoproteins, and acid phosphates) into the intracellular space; this extruded material is thought to function as a barrier to penetration by foreign substances. Called also lamellar granule or body, membrane-coating granule, and Odland body.
