| kaposi's sarcoma | <oncology, tumour> A type of vascular cancer characterised by soft purple nodules that usually develop first on the feet and then slowly spread across the skin. This cancer is most often found in people with compromised immune systems, such as AIDS patients. (09 Oct 1997) |

| sarcoma, kaposi | A multicentric, malignant neoplastic vascular proliferation characterised by the development of bluish-red cutaneous nodules, usually on the lower extremities, most often on the toes or feet, and slowly increasing in size and number and spreading to more proximal areas. The tumours have endothelium-lined channels and vascular spaces admixed with variably sized aggregates of spindle-shaped cells, and often remain confined to the skin and subcutaneous tissue, but widespread visceral involvement may occur. Kaposi's sarcoma occurs spontaneously in jewish and italian males in europe and the united states. An aggressive variant in young children is endemic in some areas of africa. A third form occurs in about 0.04% of kidney transplant patients. There is also a high incidence in aids patients. Hhv-8 is the suspected cause. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| herpes virus, kaposi sarcoma-associated | Species of an unnamed genus, subfamily gammaherpesvirinae, isolated from patients with aids-related and "classical" kaposi sarcoma. The sequences suggest this is a new human herpes virus, unofficially identified as human herpes virus-8 (hhv-8). (12 Dec 1998) |

| Kaposi sarcoma | <oncology, tumour> A sarcoma of spindle cells mixed with angiomatous tissue. A relatively rare malignant skin tumour that results in multifocal purplish coloured papules or plaques that eventually form nodules. Usually classed as an angioblastic tumour. Seen most commonly in patients who suffer from AIDS. Tumours may also occur within the intestines and lungs. Diagnosis may be confirmed with skin biopsy or upper GI endoscopy. Radiation therapy, cryotherapy and chemotherapy have all been used in the treatment of Kaposi sarcoma. (27 Sep 1997) |

| Kaposi's sarcoma |
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a kind of sarcoma caused by a herpesvirus infection in which cancerous cells, as well as abnormal growth of blood vessels, form solid lesions in connective tissue. KS was historically very rare and found mainly in older men of Mediterranean or African origin (classic KS) or patients with severely weakened immune systems, such as after an organ transplant (immunosuppressive treatment related KS). ...
