| isovaleric acid | (CH3)2CHCH2COOH; 3-Methylbutyric acid;a metabolic intermediate in oxidative processes; elevated in cases of isovaleric acidemia. (05 Mar 2000) |

| isovaleric acidemia | A disorder of leucine metabolism characterised by the excessive production of isovaleric acid upon protein ingestion or during infectious episodes; severe metabolic acidosis results from the large quantities of acid formed; autosomal recessive inheritance; due to a deficiency of isovaleryl-CoA dehydrogenase. Synonym: sweaty feet syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| isovaleric acid |

| isovalericacidemia |
an autosomal recessive aminoacidopathy due to deficiency of isovaleryl-CoA dehydrogenase, with elevated plasma isovaleric acid and urinary isovaleric acid and isovalerylglycine, causing a characteristic odor of sweaty feet. Clinical signs include severe acidosis and ketosis, lethargy, convulsions, pernicious vomiting, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and pancytopenia. Two clinical forms, possibly allelic, exist: the acute neonatal form leads rapidly to coma and death; the chronic intermittent form is milder and usually of later onset, with acute episodic attacks and variable psychomotor dysfunction.
