| Iridoviridae |
the iridoviruses: a family of DNA viruses having a virion 125300 nm in diameter, consisting of a lipid envelope modified by protein subunits surrounding an icosahedral nucleocapsid. The genome consists of a single molecule of linear, double-stranded DNA (MW 100250×106, size 150350 kbp). Viruses contain more than 20 structural proteins and are sensitive to ether, chloroform, deoxycholate, heat, and some disinfectants. Replication and assembly occur in the cytoplasm; virions are released by budding or cell destruction. Most species have a narrow host range; transmission may be horizontal or vertical. Most members are insect viruses (genera Iridovirus, Chloriridovirus), but some are pathogenic for fish (Lymphocystivirus) and frogs (Ranavirus); African swine fever virus was formerly assigned to this family.
