intumescentia cervicalis A spindle-shaped swelling of the spinal cord extending from the third cervical to the second thoracic vertebra, with maximum thickness opposite the fifth or sixth cervical vertebra, consequential to the innervation of the upper limb.
Synonym: intumescentia cervicalis, cervical enlargement of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)

intumescentia Synonym: enlargement.
Origin: Mod. L.
(05 Mar 2000)
intumescentia ganglioformis The sensory ganglion of the facial (7th cranial) nerve. The geniculate ganglion cells send central processes to the brainstem and peripheral processes to the taste buds in the anterior tongue, the soft palate, and the skin of the external auditory meatus and the mastoid process.
(12 Dec 1998)
intumescentia lumbalis A spindle-shaped swelling of the spinal cord beginning at the level of the tenth thoracic vertebra and tapering into the medullary cone, with maximum thickness opposite the last thoracic vertebra, consequential to the innervation of the lower limb.
Synonym: intumescentia lumbalis, lumbar enlargement of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
intumescentia tympanica A swelling, not ganglionic, on the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeus nerve; it is regarded as possibly similar to the carotid glomus.
Synonym: intumescentia tympanica, tympanic intumescence.
(05 Mar 2000)
ansa cervicalis A loop in the cervical plexus consisting of fibres from the first three cervical nerves. Fibres from a loop between the C-1 and C-2 spinal nerves accompany the hypoglossal nerve for a short distance, leaving it as the superior root of the ansa cervicalis. Fibres from a loop between the C-2 and C-3 spinal nerves form the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis. Most commonly, the roots merge, forming the ansa cervicalis, which gives rise to branches innervating infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: cervical loop, loop of hypoglossal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cervicalis ascendens <anatomy, artery> Origin, usually a terminal branch of the thyrocervical trunk (along with interior thyroid artery); distribution, muscles of neck and spinal cord; anastomoses, branches of vertebral, occipital, ascending pharyngeal, and deep cervical.
Synonym: arteria cervicalis ascendens, cervicalis ascendens.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cervicalis profunda <anatomy, artery> Origin, terminal branch of costocervical trunk (along with superior intercostal artery); distribution, posterior deep muscles of neck; anastomoses, branches of occipital, ascending cervical, and vertebral.
Synonym: arteria cervicalis profunda.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cervicalis superficialis <anatomy, artery> Origin, branch of thyrocervical trunk, running with spinal accessory nerve deep to trapezius muscle.
See: superficial branch of the transverse cervical artery.
Synonym: arteria cervicalis superficialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
radix inferior ansae cervicalis Fibres from the second and third cervical nerves that pass forward and downward along the internal jugular vein; they contribute to the ansa cervicalis and innervate the infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: descendens cervicalis, radix inferior ansae cervicalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
radix superior ansae cervicalis The fibres that arise from the first and second cervical nerves, accompany the hypoglossal nerve, then branch off to meet the inferior root in the ansa cervicalis; they innervate the infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: descendens hypoglossi, descending branch of hypoglossal nerve, radix superior ansae cervicalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
rami inferiores nervi transversi cervicalis <anatomy, nerve> Branch of transverse cervical nerve providing cutaneous innervation in lower part of anterior triangle of neck.
Synonym: rami inferiores nervi transversi cervicalis [colli].
(05 Mar 2000)
rami laryngopharyngei ganglii cervicalis superioris Branches conveying postganglionic sympathetic fibres from the superior cervical ganglion to the pharyngeal plexus.
Synonym: rami laryngopharyngei ganglii cervicalis superioris.
(05 Mar 2000)
ramus cervicalis nervi facialis An alternate term for cervical branch of facial nerve.
Ramus chiasmaticus, the chiasmatic branch, a branch of the middle cerebral artery to the optic chiasm.
(05 Mar 2000)
ramus superior nervi transversalis cervicalis <anatomy, nerve> Branch providing cutaneous innervation in upper part of anterior triangle of neck.
Synonym: ramus superior nervi transversalis cervicalis (colli).
(05 Mar 2000)
vena cervicalis profunda <anatomy, vein> Large vein running with the artery of the same name between the semispinalis capitis and semispinalis cervicis draining the deep muscles at the back of the neck and emptying into the brachiocephalic or the vertebral vein.
Synonym: vena cervicalis profunda.
