| intracardiac | <anatomy> Within one of the chambers of the heart. Synonym: endocardiac, endocardial, intracordal. Origin: intra-+ G. Kardia, heart (05 Mar 2000) |

| intracardiac catheter | <cardiology> A catheter that can be passed into the heart through a vein or artery, to withdraw samples of blood, measure pressures within the heart's chambers or great vessels, and inject contrast media. It is used mainly in the diagnosis and evaluation of congenital, rheumatic, and coronary artery lesions and to evaluate systolic and diastolic cardiac function. Synonym: cardiac catheter. | intracardiac electrophysiology studies | <cardiology, investigation> A special study that involves the placement of electrodes inside the heart to map the electrical characteristics of the heart. This study is carried out in a specially equipped lab and is similar to a cardiac catheterisation procedure. Electrodes are placed inside the heart via a catheter placed into a vein. The electrodes are positioned near the heart's conduction system and an electrical map of the heart can be determined. This test is often performed in those where a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia is a problem. The location and characteristics of an arrhythmia can be determined, thus guiding medical management of the problem. Patients with Wolf Parkinson White syndrome or sick sinus syndrome may have this test as part of their evaluation. (27 Sep 1997) |
| intracardiac lead | The record obtained when the exploring electrode is placed within one of the heart's chambers, usually by means of cardiac catheterization. (05 Mar 2000) |
| intracardiac pressure curve | Curve of pressure recorded within the atrium or ventricle (intra-atrial and intraventricular pressure curve's). (05 Mar 2000) |
