| 설명 | 매독 때문에 일어나는 만성 중추신경병. 중추신경계쪽의 Treponema pallidum 감염에 기인되고, 척수 뒤기둥 및 감각신경간이 황폐되고 변성되는 것이다. 이 병은 매독 제3기(후기) 단계이고, 벼락치는 것 같은 격통의 발작, 협조운동불능, 감각장애, 힘줄반사소실, 위, 후두 등 각종 기관의 기능장애 발작이 뚜렷한 증상이다. 또한 각종(특히 뼈나 관절) 영양장애, 실금 혹은 오줌체류, 성기능저하등이 나타난다. 이 병의 경과는 보통 완만하나, 진행성이며 진행을 정지시킬 수도 있으나 완전한 치유는 극히 드물며, 대부분은 중년 이전에 발생되고, 남성에 많다. |

| 설명 | 콩팥사이질(renal interstitium: 콩팥의 세뇨관 사이의 결합조직)의 염증. 급성으로 일어나는 간질콩팥염은 대개 많은 약을 복용한 후에 발생하는 데, 열, 피부의 변색, 혈액내의 호산구증 그리고 소변의 감소와 콩팥기능의 감소를 특징으로 한다. 치료는 복용중인 약을 끊고, 부신겉질호르몬제를 투여한다. 콩팥은 각종 노폐물, 전해질, 수분 등을 포함한 요를 생산하여 배출하는 동시에 수소이온, 나트륨, 칼륨, 인산 이온 농도 등을 조절하며 내분비와 외분비 기능에 관여하기도 한다. |

| neurosyphilis, tabes | Also known as tabes dorsalis, the slowly progressive degeneration of the spinal cord that occurs in the late (tertiary) phase of syphilis a decade or more after contracting the infection. Among the terrible features are lancinating lightning-like pain, ataxia (wobbliness), deterioration of the nerve to the eye (the optic nerve) leading to blindness, urinary incontinence, loss of the sense of position, and degeneration of the joints (charcot's joints). Tabes is the latin word for decay. The term tabes dorsalis was devised in 1836 when the cause of the condition was thought to be wastage of the dorsal (posterior) columns of the spinal cord, well before it was recognised as part of late syphilis. Loss of position sense causes severe gait and leg ataxia (balance and motor control problems). Tabes dorsalis can be the result of spinal cord injury or infection (syphilis). | acute interstitial nephritis | <nephrology> A relatively uncommon condition which is characterised by inflammation of the renal tubules, glomeruli and surrounding tissue. Interstitial nephritis is usually be temporary and often associated with the use of a particular medication. Chronic and progressive forms do exist. Drugs that have been associated with interstitial nephritis include penicillins, ampicillin, sulpha drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, furosemide and thiazide diuretics.
