biological hazard potential <radiobiology> Measure of the hazard posed by a given quantity of radioactive material in which the variation in biological effects of the various elements are accounted for.
See: integrated biological hazard potential.
(21 Mar 1998)
hazard This is a general term for anything which has the ability to cause injury. The hazard associated with a potentially toxic substance is a function of its toxicity and the potential for exposure to the substance. The probability of exposure to the substance is a risk factor.
(09 Oct 1997)
hazard rate <statistics> Theoretical measure of the risk of occurrence of an event, e.g., death, new disease, at a point in time.
(05 Mar 2000)
integrated biological hazard potential <radiobiology> Total biological hazard potential of a collection of radioactive materials summed over their decay lifetimes. One measure of the integrated biological hazard potential is the amount of water one would need to use to dilute the materials to the point where the water would be safe to drink.
(09 Oct 1997)
whole-body irradiation Irradiation of the whole body with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation. It is applicable to humans or animals but not to microorganisms.
(12 Dec 1998)
cranial irradiation The exposure of the head to roentgen rays or other forms of radioactivity for therapeutic or preventive purposes.
(12 Dec 1998)
hemibody irradiation Irradiation of one half or both halves of the body in the treatment of disseminated cancer or widespread metastases. It is used to treat diffuse metastases in one session as opposed to multiple fields over an extended period. The more frequent treatment modalities are upper hemibody irradiation (uhbi) or lower hemibody irradiation (lhbi). Less common is mid-body irradiation (mbi). In the treatment of both halves of the body sequentially, hemibody irradiation permits radiotherapy of the whole body with larger doses of radiation than could be accomplished with whole-body irradiation. It is sometimes called "systemic" hemibody irradiation with reference to its use in widespread cancer or metastases. (p. Rubin et al. Cancer, vol 55, p2210, 1985)
(12 Dec 1998)
prophylactic cranial irradiation Radiation therapy to the head to prevent cancer from spreading to the brain.
(12 Dec 1998)
irradiation Treatment by ionising radiation, such as X-rays or radioactive sources such as radioactive iodine seeds.
See: radiation therapy.
(16 Dec 1997)
total body irradiation Radiotherapy often given in several doses prior to bone marrow transplantation with the aim of killing any residual leukaemia in the patient. It is used in conjunction with high-dose anti-cancer drugs. The procedure and its side-effects will be discussed individually with the patient.
(13 Nov 1997)
lymphatic irradiation External or interstitial irradiation to treat lymphomas (e.g., hodgkin's and non-hodgkin's lymphomas) and lymph node metastases and also some autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
(12 Dec 1998)
abdominal internal oblique muscle <anatomy, muscle> Origin, iliac fascia deep to lateral part of inguinal ligament, anterior half of crest of ilium, and lumbar fascia; insertion, tenth to twelfth ribs and sheath of rectus; some of the fibres from inguinal ligament terminate in the conjoint tendon; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, flexes lumbar vertebral column (bends thorax forward); nerve supply, lower thoracic.
Synonym: musculus obliquus internus abdominis, abdominal internal oblique muscle.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior intercostal branches of internal thoracic artery One of the arteries supplying the anterior portions of the intercostal spaces of the thoracic wall. Anterior intercostal arteries 1-6 arise as branches of the internal thoracic artery; 7-11 arise as branches of the musculophrenic artery.
Synonym: rami intercostales anteriores, rami intercostalis anteriores arteria thoracica interna.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior limb of internal capsule The portion of the internal capsule between the head of the caudate nucleus and the putamen; it lies anterior to the genu of the internal capsule.
Synonym: crus anterius capsulae internae.
(05 Mar 2000)
aponeurosis of internal abdominal oblique muscle <anatomy> Broad, flat tendinous portion of the internal abdominal oblique muscle. The fleshy fibres of the muscle end in the aponeurosis lateral to the semilunar line. The uppermost portion of the aponeurosis is attached to the outer surfaces and lower borders of the seventh to ninth costal cartilages. Of the portion extending between the costoxiphoid margin and the pubis, the upper two-thirds splits into anterior and posterior laminae at the lateral border of the rectus abdominis muscle to contribute to the anterior and posterior walls of the sheath of the rectus abdominis muscle as they extend to the midline linea alba. The lower third of the aponeurosis does not split but joins the aponeuroses of the external abdominal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles to form the anterior wall of the sheath of the rectus abdominis muscle. The fibres of the portion of the aponeurosis contributing to the rectus sheath decussate with those of the contralateral aponeurosis in the linea alba. The lowermost portion of the aponeurosis blends with the aponeurosis of the transversus abdominis muscle to form the conjoint tendon, attaching to the pubic crest and often the pecten pubis, thus forming the posterior wall of the inguinal canal at the superficial inguinal ring.
See: cremasteric fascia, conjoint tendon, rectus sheath.
