| infundibular stalk | The neural component of the pituitary stalk that contains nerve tracts passing from the hypothalamus to the pars nervosa. Synonym: infundibular stalk. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| infundibular | Relating to an infundibulum. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| infundibular part | <anatomy> The upward extension of the anterior lobe that wraps around the infundibular stalk; its cells, mostly gonadotropic, are arranged in cords and clusters; it is supplied by the superior hypophyseal arteries and contains the first capillary bed and the venules of a portal system that carries neurosecretory factors from the hypothalamus to a second capillary bed in the adenohypophysis where they regulate the release of hormones. See: hypophysis. Synonym: infundibular part, pars infundibularis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| infundibular recess | A funnel-shaped diverticulum leading from the anterior portion of the third ventricle down into the infundibulum of the hypophysis. Synonym: recessus infundibuli, aditus ad infundibulum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| infundibular stem | The neural component of the pituitary stalk that contains nerve tracts passing from the hypothalamus to the pars nervosa. Synonym: infundibular stalk. (05 Mar 2000) |
| infundibular stenosis | Narrowing of the outflow tract of the right ventricle below the pulmonic valve; may be due to a localised fibrous diaphragm just below the valve or, more commonly, to a long narrow fibromuscular channel. Synonym: Dittrich's stenosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| celery stalk metaphyses | <radiology> Irregularity of metaphyses, primarily of long bones due to congenital infection (ToRCHS), especially rubella Differential diagnosis: osteopathia striata (Voerhaave syndrome) (12 Dec 1998) |
| pituitary stalk section | Transection of the neurovascular connection between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. (05 Mar 2000) |
| connecting stalk | body stalk |
| stalk | A stem. Usually refers to the pituitary stalk that connects the pituitary gland to the hypothalamus. (16 Dec 1997) |
| stalk-eyed | <zoology> Having the eyes raised on a stalk, or peduncle; opposed to sessile-eyed. Said especially of podophthalmous crustaceans. Stalked-eyed crustaceans. <zoology> See Podophthalmia. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| stalk of epiglottis | The lower end or pedicle of the cartilage of the epiglottis, attached to the superior notch of the thyroid cartilage. Synonym: petiolus epiglottidis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| optic stalk | The constricted proximal portion of the optic vesicle in the embryo; it develops into the optic nerve. Pineal stalk, the attachment of the pineal body to the roof of the third ventricle; it contains the pineal recess of the third ventricle. Pituitary stalk, a process comprising the tuberal part investing the infundibular stem that attaches the hypophysis to the tuber cinereum at the base of the brain. Yolk stalk, the narrowed connection between the intraembryonic gut and the yolk sac; its walls are splanchnopleure. Synonym: umbilical duct, vitelline duct, vitellointestinal duct. (05 Mar 2000) |
| yolk stalk | A narrow tube present in the early embryo that connects the midgut of the embryo (through the umbilical opening) to the yolk sac outside the embryo. Later in development, the yolk stalk is usually obliterated but a remnants of it may persist, most commonly as a finger-like protrusion from the small intestine known as meckel's diverticulum. Found in 2-4% of people, meckel's diverticulum may become inflamed much like the appendix and require surgical removal. The yolk stalk is also called the umbilical duct, vitelline duct, or oomphalomesenteric duct. (12 Dec 1998) |
