| immunocytochemistry | <technique> Techniques for staining cells or tissues using antibodies against the appropriate antigen. Although in principle the first antibody could be labelled, it is more common (and improves the visualisation) to use a second antibody directed against the first (an antiIgG). This second antibody is conjugated either with fluorochromes or appropriate enzymes for colourimetric reactions or gold beads (for electron microscopy) or with the biotin avidin system, so that the location of the primary antibody and thus the antigen, can be recognised. | immunocytochemistry |
technique used to assess the presence of a specific protein in tissue sections (prepared from a biopsy) by use of a specific antibody, which binds to it, thereby allowing visualisation.

| immunocytochemistry |
A method of detecting cancer in tissues. Monoclonal antibodies are used to stain the tissues and cells before examination under a microscope. (See also monoclonal antibodies.)
