| mold | A large group of fungi (like Penicillium) that cause mold (as on bread or cheese). A common trigger for allergies. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| mold guide | A guide used to specify the shape of artificial teeth, or of an artificial tooth. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pink bread mold | A fungus of the group Ascomycetes. It is haploid and grows as a mycelium. There are two mating types and fusion of nuclei of two opposite types leads to meiosis followed by mitosis. The resulting eight nuclei generate eight ascospores. These are arranged linearly in an ordered fashion in a pod like ascus, so that the various products of meiotic division can be identified and isolated. Because of this, Neurospora crassa is one of the classic organisms for genetic research, studies on biochemical mutants led Beadle and Tatum to propose the seminal one gene one enzyme hypothesis. (18 Nov 1997) |
| immobilization | The act of rendering whole or part of the body immobile, whether accidental or deliberate. This also refers to the state of immobility. (12 Dec 1998) |
| treponema immobilization test | Syphilis serodiagnosis employing as the antigen treponema pallidum obtained from rabbit syphilis orchitis. Treponemes are kept alive for a few hours in a special medium. When syphilitic serum and complement are added and incubated, the treponemes are immobilised, i.e., stop moving. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Treponema pallidum immobilization reaction | A test for syphilis in which an antibody other than Wassermann antibody is present in the serum of a syphilitic patient, which in the presence of complement causes the immobilization of actively motile Treponema pallidum obtained from testes of a rabbit infected with syphilis. Synonym: TPI test, Treponema pallidum immobilization reaction. (05 Mar 2000) |
