accompanying vein of hypoglossal nerve Runs with the hypoglossal nerve below and lateral to the hyoglossus muscle, emptying usually into the lingual vein.
Synonym: accompanying vein of hypoglossal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
venous plexus of hypoglossal canal A small venous network around the hypoglossal nerve, connecting with the occipital sinus, inferior petrosal sinus, and internal jugular vein.
Synonym: plexus venosus canalis hypoglossi, circellus venosus hypoglossi, rete canalis hypoglossi.
(05 Mar 2000)
communicating branches of lingual nerve to hypoglossal nerve <anatomy, nerve> Communicating branches between the lingual nerve (from mandibular nerve) and hypoglossal nerve forming a plexus on the hypoglossus muscle.
Synonym: rami communicantes nervi lingualis cum nervo hypoglosso.
(05 Mar 2000)
hypoglossal <anatomy> Under the tongue; applied especially, in the higher vertebrates, to the twelfth or last pair of cranial nerves, which are distributed to the base of the tongue.
One of the hypoglossal nerves.
Origin: Pref. Hypo- + Gr. The tongue.
Source: Websters Dictionary
(01 Mar 1998)
hypoglossal canal The canal through which the hypoglossal nerve emerges from the skull.
Synonym: canalis hypoglossalis, anterior condyloid canal of occipital bone, anterior condyloid foramen.
(05 Mar 2000)
hypoglossal eminence A slight elevation in the floor of the inferior recess of the fourth ventricle, beneath which is the nucleus of origin of the twelfth cranial nerve.
Synonym: trigonum nervi hypoglossi, eminentia hypoglossi, hypoglossal eminence, trigone of hypoglossal nerve, trigonum hypoglossi, tuberculum hypoglossi.
(05 Mar 2000)
hypoglossal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The hypoglossal nerve enervates the muscles of the tongue.
Lesions of the twelfth cranial nerve result in deviation of the tongue toward the paralysed side and thick speech.
Synonym: cranial nerve XII.
(27 Sep 1997)
hypoglossal nucleus The motor nucleus innervating the intrinsic and four of the five extrinsic muscles of the tongue; it is located in the medulla oblongata near the midline, immediately beneath the floor of the inferior recess of the rhomboid fossa.
Synonym: nucleus nervi hypoglossi, nucleus of hypoglossal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
nucleus of hypoglossal nerve The motor nucleus innervating the intrinsic and four of the five extrinsic muscles of the tongue; it is located in the medulla oblongata near the midline, immediately beneath the floor of the inferior recess of the rhomboid fossa.
Synonym: nucleus nervi hypoglossi, nucleus of hypoglossal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)
descending branch of hypoglossal nerve The fibres that arise from the first and second cervical nerves, accompany the hypoglossal nerve, then branch off to meet the inferior root in the ansa cervicalis; they innervate the infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: descendens hypoglossi, descending branch of hypoglossal nerve, radix superior ansae cervicalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
loop of hypoglossal nerve A loop in the cervical plexus consisting of fibres from the first three cervical nerves. Fibres from a loop between the C-1 and C-2 spinal nerves accompany the hypoglossal nerve for a short distance, leaving it as the superior root of the ansa cervicalis. Fibres from a loop between the C-2 and C-3 spinal nerves form the inferior root of the ansa cervicalis. Most commonly, the roots merge, forming the ansa cervicalis, which gives rise to branches innervating infrahyoid muscles.
Synonym: cervical loop, loop of hypoglossal nerve.
(05 Mar 2000)

(05 Mar 2000)
ventricular trigone A triangular prominence of the floor of the lateral ventricle at the transition between occipital and temporal horn, continuous rostrally with the collateral eminence and, like the latter, caused by the deep penetration of the collateral sulcus from the ventral surface of the temporal lobe.
Synonym: trigonum collaterale, trigone of lateral ventricle, trigonum ventriculi, ventricular trigone.
(05 Mar 2000)
