an order of ciliate protozoa (subclass Hymenostomatia, class Oligohymenophorea) characterized by the presence of a well-defined buccal cavity containing membranelles or peniculi with infraciliary bases typically three to four rows of kinetosomes wide; and by a ventral oral area, usually in the anterior half of the body. It comprises three suborders: Tetrahymenina, Ophryoglenina, and Peniculina.
