Alone, the enzyme produces uroporphyrinogen I; in the presence of uroporphyrinogen synthase it produces uroporphyrinogen III, the physiologically important isomer. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal dominant trait, results in acute intermittent porphyria. Called also porphobilinogen deaminase and uroporphyrinogen I synthase.
