adjustable articulator An articulator which may be adjusted to permit movement of the casts into recorded eccentric relationships, an articulator capable of adjustment to more than one eccentric position.
(05 Mar 2000)
arcon articulator An articulator with the equivalent condylar guides fixed to the upper member and the hinge axis to the lower member, an instrument that maintains a constant relationship between the occlusal plane and the arcon guides at any position of the upper member, thereby making possible more accurate reproductions of mandibular movements.
(05 Mar 2000)
articulator <dentistry> A special holder for models of your teeth. The articulator holds the models in the same alignment as your jaw so the orthodontist can look carefully at your bite.
(08 Jan 1998)
non-arcon articulator An articulator with the equivalent condylar guides attached to the lower member and the hinge axis to the upper member.
(05 Mar 2000)
mandibular hinge position Any position of the mandible which exists when the condyles are so situated in the temporomandibular joints that opening or closing movements can be made on the hinge axis.
(05 Mar 2000)
condylar hinge position The position of the condyles in the temporomandibular joints from which a hinge movement is possible, the maxillomandibular relation from which a consciously stimulated true hinge movement can be executed.
(05 Mar 2000)
hinge 1. The hook with its eye, or the joint, on which a door, gate, lid, etc, turns or swings; a flexible piece, as a strip of leather, which serves as a joint to turn on. "The gate self-opened wide, On golden hinges turning." (Milton)
2. That on which anything turns or depends; a governing principle; a cardinal point or rule; as, this argument was the hinge on which the question turned.

<anatomy> Any joint resembling a hinge, by which two pieces are connected so as to permit relative turning in one plane. To be off the hinges, to be in a state of disorder or irregularity; to have lost proper adjustment.
Origin: OE. Henge, heeng; akin to D. Heng, LG. Henge, Prov. E. Hingle a small hinge; connected with hang, v, and Icel. Hengja to hang. See Hang.

Synonym: hinge axis, mandibular axis.
(05 Mar 2000)
hinge-bow <dentistry, equipment> A wire caliper-like device used to record the relationship of the jaws to the temporomandibular joints. The resulting record can then be used to create a cast or model of the maxilla to the opening and closing axis of the articulator.
They consists of two metal parts attached together. The inner part is shaped like a horseshoe and is inserted in the mouth and connects to the buccal tubes. The outer part has two curves which go around the face, and connect to the headgear. An elastic neck band is placed around the back of the neck and attaches to the outer bow of the headgear. Completing the apparatus is a plastic safety strap that is placed over the neck band and onto the outer bow of the headgear.
Synonym: hinge-bow, kinematic face-bow.
(21 Jun 2000)
hinge joint A uniaxial joint in which a broad, transversely cylindrical convexity on one bone fits into a corresponding concavity on the other, allowing of motion in one plane only, as in the elbow.
Synonym: ginglymus, ginglymoid joint.
(05 Mar 2000)
hinge movement An opening or closing movement of the mandible on the hinge axis.
(05 Mar 2000)
hinge position In dentistry, the orientation of parts in a manner permitting hinge movement between them.
(05 Mar 2000)
hinge region <immunology, molecular biology> Flexible region of a polypeptide chain for example: as in immunoglobulins between Fab and Fc regions and in myosin the S2 portion of heavy meromyosin.
(18 Nov 1997)
terminal hinge position The mandibular hinge position from which further opening of the mandible would produce translatory rather than hinge movement.
