| kininogen, high-molecular-weight | A plasma protein, molecular weight of 110 kD, that normally exists in plasma in a 1:1 complex with prekallikrein. Hmwk is split by plasma kallikrein to produce bradykinin. The complex is a cofactor in the activation of coagulation factor xii. The product of this reaction, xiia, in turn activates prekallikrein to kallikrein. (12 Dec 1998) |

| gram-molecular weight | Molecular weight expressed in grams. Compare: mole. (05 Mar 2000) |
| molecular weight | The sum of the atomic weight's of all the atoms constituting a molecule; the mass of a molecule relative to the mass of a standard atom, now 12C (taken as 12.000). Relative molecular mass (Mr) is the mass relative to the dalton and has no units. See: atomic weight. Synonym: molecular mass, molecular weight ratio, relative molecular mass. (05 Mar 2000) |
| molecular weight ratio | The sum of the atomic weight's of all the atoms constituting a molecule; the mass of a molecule relative to the mass of a standard atom, now 12C (taken as 12.000). Relative molecular mass (Mr) is the mass relative to the dalton and has no units. See: atomic weight. Synonym: molecular mass, molecular weight ratio, relative molecular mass. (05 Mar 2000) |
| heparin, low-molecular-weight | <chemical> Heparin fractions with a molecular weight usually between 4000 and 6000 kD. These low-molecular-weight fractions are effective antithrombotic agents. Their administration reduces the risk of haemorrhage, they have a longer half-life, and their platelet interactions are reduced in comparison to unfractionated heparin. They also provide an effective prophylaxis against postoperative major pulmonary embolism. Pharmacological action: anticoagulant, fibrinolytic agent. (12 Dec 1998) |
| kininogen, low-molecular-weight | A protein, molecular weight 50 kD, located in various normal tissues. Upon cleavage by kallikrein or other kallikreins, it forms kallidin. Kallidin, in turn, is converted into bradykinin. (12 Dec 1998) |
| C2 kinin | <biochemistry, protein> A kinin like fragment generated from complement C2, causes vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. Distinct from bradykinin. (07 Nov 1997) |
| kallikrein-kinin system | A system produced in the distal nephron of the kidney. Its components are kallikrein, kinins, kininase I and II, and enkephalinase. It is involved in mediation and modulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, prostaglandins, vasopressins, and in the regulation of sodium-water balance, renal haemodynamics, and particularly blood pressure. The system participates in the control of renal functions and the physiopathology of renal diseases. (12 Dec 1998) |
| kinin | One of a number of widely differing substances having pronounced and dramatic physiological effects. Some (e.g., kallidin and bradykinin) are polypeptides, formed in blood by proteolysis secondary to some pathological process, that stimulate visceral smooth muscle but relax vascular smooth muscle, thus producing vasodilation; others (e.g., kinetin) are plant growth regulators. Origin: G. Kineo, to move, + -in (05 Mar 2000) |
| kinin 9 | <protein> Vasoactive nonapeptide (RPPGFSPFR) formed by action of proteases on kininogens. Very similar to kallidin (which has the same sequence but with an additional N terminal lysine). Bradykinin is a very potent vasodilator and increases permeability of post capillary venules, it acts on endothelial cells to activate phospholipase A2. It is also spasmogenic for some smooth muscle and will cause pain. (18 Nov 1997) |
| adrenal weight factor | A postulated substance of adenohypophysial origin responsible for maintenance of the weight of the adrenal cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apothecaries' weight | An obsolescent system of weights based upon the weight of a grain of wheat. Has been used for centuries in weighing medicines and precious metals (Troy measure). Some drugs which have been available for long periods are still often designated as grains (e.g., 5 grains of aspirin, 1/2 grain of codeine, 1/100 grain nitroglycerin). This weight system has been largely superseded by the metric system (based on grams). One grain is the equivalent of 64.8 milligrams. One scruple contains 20 grains; one dram contains 60 grains; one apothecary ounce contains 8 drams (480 grains); one apothecary pound contains 12 ounces (5760 grains). (05 Mar 2000) |
| atomic weight | <chemistry> The average weight of an atom of an element, i.e. The total mass of protons and neutrons in an atom. (09 Oct 1997) |
| birth weight | In humans, the first weight of an infant obtained within less than the first 60 completed minutes after birth; a full-size infant is one weighing 2500 g or more; a low birth weight is less than 2500 g. (05 Mar 2000) |
| body-weight ratio | Body weight (in grams) divided by stature (in centimeters). (05 Mar 2000) |
