| hemozoin |
a pigment produced by malarial parasites, derived from the hemoglobin in the host's cells, and consisting of insoluble ferriprotoporphyrin polymers that enable the parasites to sequester in benign form. In chronic cases of malaria, hemozoin collects in tissues, e.g., the spleen, giving the organ a grayish to dark brown or black color. Also written haemozoin.
