| heartwater |
a fatal rickettsial disease of cattle, sheep, and goats in sub-Saharan Africa and on certain islands in the Indian Ocean, marked by fluid accumulation in the pleura, pericardium, and pleural cavity. It is caused by Cowdria ruminantium, which is transmitted by the ticks Amblyomma hebraeum and A. variegata. Called also cowdriosis, veld or veldt disease, and veld or veldt sickness.
