영문 enamel 한글 사기질
설명   
  치아의 한 부분을 이르는 말이다. 치아관을 피복하는 회백색 반투명의 단단한 물질이다. 치아는 크게 치아관(crown)과 치근(root)으로 나눌 수가 있다. 치아관이란 구강내로 돌출하고 있는 치아의 부분이며, 치근이란 치아관 아래에 존재하는 치아의 부분을 말한다. 사기질은 치아관을 둘러싸고 있는 아주 단단한 조직으로 우리가 입안으로 직접 관찰할 수가 있는 흰색을 띠는 것이다. 전신에서 가장 단단한 부분으로 굳기 6~7° 이므로 석영과 거의 비슷하다. 사기질소주라고 하는 3~5μm 굵기의 사상체의 집합으로 한 개의 이에 수백만 개의 작은기둥이 있다. 사기질은 한번 마모되거나 녹아 버리면 다시 신생되지 않는다. 잇몸의 내부에 있는 치근부에서는 상아질 표면이 시멘트질로 덮여 있다. 사기질에는 신경이 없으므로 여기에 생긴 충치에는 치통이 없으나, 상아질까지 침범되었을 때 냉수가 스며들면 이가 시리고 치통이 시작된다. 소량의 플루오르화물을 섭취하면 이가 건강해진다고 하지만 과다하면 사기질을 상하게 한다.

dental porcelain <chemical> A type of porcelain used in dental restorations, either jacket crowns or inlays, artificial teeth, or metal-ceramic crowns. It is essentially a mixture of particles of feldspar and quartz, the feldspar melting first and providing a glass matrix for the quartz. Dental porcelain is produced by mixing ceramic powder (a mixture of quartz, kaolin, pigments, opacifiers, a suitable flux, and other substances) with distilled water.

gum ammoniac <medicine> The concrete juice (gum resin) of an umbelliferous plant, the Dorema ammoniacum. It is brought chiefly from Persia in the form of yellowish tears, which occur singly, or are aggregated into masses. It has a peculiar smell, and a nauseous, sweet taste, followed by a bitter one. It is inflammable, partially soluble in water and in spirit of wine, and is used in medicine as an expectorant and resolvent, and for the formation of certain plasters.
Origin: L. Ammoniacum, Gr. A resinous gum, said to distill from a tree near the temple of Jupiter Ammon; cf. F. Ammoniac. See Ammonite.
