The eating of dirt. Caiques as well as a large number of other parrots eat soil. Wild parrots are well documented visitors at soil licks in the Amazon. These licks are typically exposed by erosion near river banks. Parrots only eat from one stratum of the exposed strata in these banks. It is thought that they do not consume the soil to obtain grit but instead for minerals that help neutralize the toxins in their diet (Gilardi, 1999; Diamond, 1999).
