Intermittent malaria, a malarial fever, usually of the tertian or quartan type, in which there is complete apyrexia, with absence of the other symptoms, in the intervals between the paroxysms.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastric analysis Measurement of pH and acid output of stomach contents; basal acid output can be determined by collecting the overnight gastric secretion or by a 1-hr collection; maximal acid output is determined following injection of histamine; output is measured by titration with a strong base.
(05 Mar 2000)

gastric arteries Arteries supplying the stomach along the lesser curvature.
See: left gastric artery, right gastric artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastric atrophy <gastroenterology> A condition in which the stomach muscles shrink and become weak. It results in a lack of digestive juices. Gastritis: Inflammation of the stomach.
(12 Dec 1998)
gastric balloon An inflatable device implanted in the stomach as an adjunct to therapy of morbid obesity. Specific types include the silicone Garren-Edwards gastric bubble (gegb), approved by the FDA in 1985, and the ballobes balloon.

Synonym: rami gastrici posteriores nervi vagi.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastric bypass Surgical procedure in which the stomach is transected high on the body. The resulting proximal remnant is joined to a loop of the jejunum in an end-to-side anastomosis. This procedure is used frequently in the treatment of morbid obesity.

gastric calculus <zoology> See Crab's eyes, under Crab.
Origin: Gastro- + -lith.

(01 Mar 1998)
gastric canal Furrow formed temporarily between longitudinal rugae of the gastric mucosa along the lesser curvature during swallowing; observed radiographically and endoscopically, it is formed because of the firm attachment of the gastric mucosa to the muscular layer, which is devoid of an oblique layer at this site; said to form a passageway favoured by saliva and small quantities of masticated food and other fluids as they flow from cardia to gastroduodenal junction.
Synonym: canalis gastricus, canalis gastrici, magenstrasse.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastric cancer Cancer of the stomach, the major organ that holds food for digestion. Stomach cancer (gastric cancer) can develop in any part of the stomach and spread to other organs. Stomach ulcers do not appear to increase a person's risk of developing stomach cancer. Symptoms of stomach cancer are often vague, such as loss of appetite and weight. The cancer is diagnosed with a biopsy of stomach tissue during a procedure. Called an endoscopy.

vagotomy, proximal gastric Vagal denervation of that part of the stomach lined with acid secreting mucosa. Since the procedure leaves the vagal branches to the antrum and pylorus intact, it circumvents gastric drainage required with truncal vagotomy techniques.
(12 Dec 1998)
parietal cells, gastric Cells of the gastric glands which secrete hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor.
(12 Dec 1998)
giant gastric folds Enlarged gastric submucosal ridges covered by hyperplastic mucosa, as seen in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Menetrier's disease, and hypertrophic hypersecretory gastropathy.
(05 Mar 2000)
giant hypertrophy of gastric mucosa Gastric mucosal hyperplasia, either mucoid or glandular; the latter type may be associated with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Synonym: giant hypertrophy of gastric mucosa, hypertrophic gastritis, Menetrier's syndrome.
(05 Mar 2000)
chief cells, gastric Epithelial cells that line the basal half of the gastric glands. Chief cells synthesise and secrete pepsinogen, a precursor of the enzyme pepsin.
(12 Dec 1998)
right gastric artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, hepatic; distribution, pyloric portion of stomach on the lesser curvature; anastomoses, left gastric.
Synonym: arteria gastrica dextra, pyloric artery.
