| sensorium | Origin: L, fr. Sentire, sensum, to discern or perceive by the senses. <physiology> The seat of sensation; the nervous center or centers to which impressions from the external world must be conveyed before they can be perceived; the place where external impressions are localised, and transformed into sensations, prior to being reflected to other parts of the organism; hence, the whole nervous system, when animated, so far as it is susceptible of common or special sensations. | ramus ventralis nervi spinalis | <anatomy, nerve> The larger, anterolaterally-directed major terminal branch (with the dorsal primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen. Most ventral primary rami, especially those involved in the innervation of the limbs, participate in the formation of the major nerve plexuses (cervical, brachial, and lumbosacral) and lose their identities. Most in the thoracic region, however, remain separate from adjacent rami to become the intercostal and subcostal nerves. Ventral primary rami provide innervation to the anterolateral body wall and trunk. Nomina Anatomica lists ventral primary rami as "rami ventrales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium )m, and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ). Synonym: ramus ventralis nervi spinalis, anterior primary division. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pars spinalis nervi accessorii | <anatomy> An alternate term for spinal root of accessory nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sulcus nervi spinalis | <anatomy, nerve> The laterally directed groove on the superior surface of the transverse processes of typical cervical vertebrae between the anterior and posterior tubercles along which the emerging spinal nerve passes. Synonym: sulcus nervi spinalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus spinalis nervi accessorii | spinal nucleus of accessory nerve |
| nucleus tractus spinalis nervi trigemini | The long sensory nucleus extending from the caudal border of the pontine sensory nucleus of the trigeminus down through the lateral region of the rhombencephalon into the upper three segments of the spinal cord's dorsal horn; it receives the fibres of the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve which descend along its lateral border as the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve. Synonym: nucleus tractus spinalis nervi trigemini, descending nucleus of the trigeminus, spinal nucleus of the trigeminus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tractus spinalis nervi trigemini | <anatomy, nerve> A compact fibre bundle, comma-shaped on transverse section, composed of primary sensory fibres of the portio major of the trigeminal nerve, descending from the level of the entrance of the trigeminus in the upper pons down through the dorsolateral region of the rhombencephalic tegmentum along the lateral side of the descending or spinal nucleus of the trigeminus, emerging on the dorsolateral surface of the lower medulla oblongata as the tuberculum cinereum, and continuing as far as the second cervical segment of the spinal cord. Its fibres are distributed to the descending or spinal nucleus of the trigeminus. Synonym: tractus spinalis nervi trigemini, descending tract of trigeminal nerve, tractus descendens nervi trigemini. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglion inferius nervi glossopharyngei | <anatomy, nerve> The lower of two sensory ganglion's on the glossopharyngeal nerve as it traverses the jugular foramen. Synonym: ganglion inferius nervi glossopharyngei, Andersch's ganglion, extracranial ganglia, ganglion extracraniale, petrosal ganglion, petrous ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglion inferius nervi vagi | <anatomy, nerve> A large sensory ganglion of the vagus, anterior to the internal jugular vein. Synonym: ganglion inferius nervi vagi, ganglion of trunk of vagus, nodose ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglion superius nervi glossopharyngei | <anatomy, nerve> The upper and smaller of two ganglia on the glossopharyngeal nerve as it traverses the jugular foramen. Synonym: ganglion superius nervi glossopharyngei, Ehrenritter's ganglion, intracranial ganglion, jugular ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglion superius nervi vagi | <anatomy, nerve> A small sensory ganglion on the vagus as it traverses the jugular foramen. Synonym: ganglion superius nervi vagi, jugular ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ramus communicans nervi glossopharyngei cum ramo auriculari nervi vagalis | <anatomy, nerve> A small branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve which joins the auricular branch of the vagus, conveying tactile fibres. Synonym: ramus communicans cum nervo glossopharyngeo, ramus communicans nervi glossopharyngei cum ramo auriculari nervi vagalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arachnoidea mater spinalis | That portion of the arachnoid which lies within the vertebral canal and surrounds the spinal cord and the vertebral portion of the subarachnoid space. It extends from the foramen magnum above to the S-2 vertebral level. Since the spinal cord ends at the L-2 vertebral level, a wide separation occurs between the arachnoid and pia mater, the lumbar cistern, filled with cerebrospinal fluid in which the cauda equina is suspended. Synonym: arachnoidea mater spinalis, spinal part of arachnoid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria spinalis anterior | <anatomy, artery> Origin, intracranial part of vertebral; distribution, spinal cord and pia mater; anastomoses, spinal of intercostal and lumbar arteries. Synonym: arteria spinalis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria spinalis posterior | <anatomy, artery> Origin, vertebral; distribution, medulla, spinal cord, and pia mater; anastomoses, spinal branches of intercostal arteries. Synonym: arteria spinalis posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
