| galactosylceramidase |
[EC 3.2.1.46] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolytic cleavage of galactose from galactocerebrosides to form ceramides, a reaction occurring in the lysosomal degradation of sphingolipids. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, causes Krabbe's disease. Called also galactocerebroside β-galactosidase.
