fossa lateralis cerebri The deep depression of the basal surface of the forebrain that corresponds in position to the anterior perforated substance. Bounded medially by the optic tract and rostrally by the orbital surface of the frontal lobe, it extends laterally around the overhanging pole of the temporal lobe into the Sylvian fissure (sulcus lateralis).
Synonym: fossa lateralis cerebri, fossa of Sylvius, lateral fossa of brain, vallecula sylvii.
(05 Mar 2000)
ramus posterior sulci lateralis cerebri The long, posteriorly-directed continuation of the lateral cerebral sulcus which extends between the temporal lobe inferiorly and the parietal lobe superiorly, its termination surrounded by the supramarginal gyrus.
Synonym: ramus posterior sulci lateralis cerebri.
(05 Mar 2000)
cisterna fossae lateralis cerebri An elongated expansion of the subarachnoid space where the arachnoid bridges over the opening of the Sylvian fissure.
Synonym: cisterna fossae lateralis cerebri.
(05 Mar 2000)
sulcus lateralis cerebri The deepest and most prominent of the cortical fissures, extending from the anterior perforated substance first laterally at the deep incisure between the frontal and temporal lobes, then back and slightly upward over the lateral aspect of the cerebral hemisphere, with the superior temporal gyrus as its lower bank, the insula forming its greatly expanded floor. Two short side branches, the ramus anterior and ramus ascendens, divide the inferior frontal gyrus into an orbital part, triangular part, and opercular part.
Synonym: sulcus lateralis cerebri, fissura cerebri lateralis, lateral cerebral fissure, sylvian fissure, fissure of Sylvius.
(05 Mar 2000)
fissura cerebri lateralis The deepest and most prominent of the cortical fissures, extending from the anterior perforated substance first laterally at the deep incisure between the frontal and temporal lobes, then back and slightly upward over the lateral aspect of the cerebral hemisphere, with the superior temporal gyrus as its lower bank, the insula forming its greatly expanded floor. Two short side branches, the ramus anterior and ramus ascendens, divide the inferior frontal gyrus into an orbital part, triangular part, and opercular part.
Synonym: sulcus lateralis cerebri, fissura cerebri lateralis, lateral cerebral fissure, sylvian fissure, fissure of Sylvius.
(05 Mar 2000)
vena ventriculi lateralis lateralis A vein draining deep portions of the temporal and parietal lobes; it runs in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle to terminate in the superior thalamostriate vein.
Synonym: vena ventriculi lateralis lateralis, lateral atrial vein, lateral vein of lateral ventricle.
(05 Mar 2000)
fossa inguinalis lateralis A depression on the peritoneal surface of the anterior abdominal wall lateral to the ridge formed by the inferior epigastric artery; it corresponds to the position of the deep inguinal ring, and is the site of an indirect inguinal hernia.
Synonym: fossa inguinalis lateralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
fossa malleoli lateralis A large rough depression on the medial aspect of the lower end of the fibula just behind the articular facet for the talus giving attachment to the posterior talofibular and the transverse tibiofibular ligaments.
Synonym: fossa malleoli lateralis, digital fossa, fossa malleoli fibulae.
(05 Mar 2000)
aditus ad aqueductum cerebri Entrance to the cerebral aqueduct (of Sylvius) from the caudal part of the third ventricle.
Synonym: aditus ad aqueductum cerebri, Bartholin's anus, opening to cerebral aqueduct.
(05 Mar 2000)
anus cerebri Entrance to the cerebral aqueduct (of Sylvius) from the caudal part of the third ventricle.
Synonym: aditus ad aqueductum cerebri, Bartholin's anus, opening to cerebral aqueduct.
(05 Mar 2000)
aqueductus cerebri An ependymal-lined canal in the mesencephalon about 20 mm long, connecting the third to the fourth ventricle.
Synonym: aqueductus cerebri, aqueduct of cerebrum, aqueductus sylvii, iter a tertio ad quartum ventriculum, sylvian aqueduct.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cerebri anterior <anatomy, artery> One of the two terminal branches (with middle cerebral artery) of the internal carotid; it passes anterior, loops around the genu of the corpus callosum then posteriorly in the interhemispheric fissure along with its fellow of the opposite side, the two being joined by the anterior communicating artery; for descriptive purposes it is divided into two parts: the precommunical part (A2 segment of clinical terminology), supplying branches to the thalamus and corpus striatum, and the postcommunical part, (A2) or pericallosal artery, supplying branches to the cortex of the medial parts of the frontal and parietal lobes.
Synonym: arteria cerebri anterior.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cerebri media <anatomy, artery> One of the two large terminal branches (with anterior cerebral artery) of the internal carotid artery; it passes laterally around the pole of the temporal lobe, then posteriorly in the depth of the lateral cerebral fissure; for descriptive purposes it is divided into three parts: 1) the sphenoidal part (M1 segment of clinical terminology), supplying perforating branches to the internal capsule, thalamus, and striate body; 2) the insular part, supplying branches to the insula and adjacent cortical areas; and 3) the terminal part or cortical part, supplying a large part of the central cortical convexity (the latter two collectively forming M2 segment).
Synonym: arteria cerebri media.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteria cerebri posterior <anatomy, artery> Formed by the bifurcation of the basilar artery; it passes around the cerebral peduncle to reach the medial aspect of the hemisphere; for descriptive purposes it is divided into three parts: 1) the precommunical part (P1 segment of clinical terminology), the part before the junction with the posterior communicating artery, supplying parts of the thalamus, hypothalamus, and midbrain; 2) the postcommunical part (P2), supplying the thalamus, cerebral peduncles, and the choroid plexuses of the lateral and third ventricles; and 3) the terminal or cortical part, supplying the cortex of the temporal (P3) and occipital (P4) lobes.
