| fornix uteri | The recess at the vault of the vagina; it is divided into an anterior part, posterior part, and lateral part with respect to its relation to the cervix of the uterus. The posterior part is clinically significant as the site for culdocentesis and culdoscopy. The proximity of the ureter (below) and the uterine artery (above) adjacent to the lateral fornix is important clinically. Synonym: fornix vaginae, fornix uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| anterior part of fornix of vagina | The portion of the fornix of the vagina anterior to the uterine cervix. Synonym: pars anterior fornicis vaginae. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| anterior pillar of fornix | That part of the fornix that curves down in front of the thalamus and the interventricular foramen of Monro, then continues through the hypothalamus to the mamillary body; consisting primarily of fibres originating in the hippocampus and subiculum, the column of fornix is the direct continuation of the body of the fornix. Synonym: columna fornicis, anterior pillar of fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| body of fornix | The middle part of the fornix situated ventral to the corpus callosum. Synonym: corpus fornicis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vaginal fornix | The recess at the vault of the vagina; it is divided into an anterior part, posterior part, and lateral part with respect to its relation to the cervix of the uterus. The posterior part is clinically significant as the site for culdocentesis and culdoscopy. The proximity of the ureter (below) and the uterine artery (above) adjacent to the lateral fornix is important clinically. Synonym: fornix vaginae, fornix uteri. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pharyngeal fornix | The non-muscular upper end of the nasopharynx where the pharyngeal mucosa is firmly applied to the body of the sphenoid bone and to pharyngobasilar fascia. Synonym: fornix pharyngis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pillars of fornix | The columna fornicis and crus fornicis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| column of fornix | That part of the fornix that curves down in front of the thalamus and the interventricular foramen of Monro, then continues through the hypothalamus to the mamillary body; consisting primarily of fibres originating in the hippocampus and subiculum, the column of fornix is the direct continuation of the body of the fornix. Synonym: columna fornicis, anterior pillar of fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| commissure of fornix | The triangular subcallosal plate of commissural fibres resulting from the converging of the right and left fornix bundles which exchange numerous fibres and which curve back in the contralateral fornix to end in the hippocampus of the opposite side. Synonym: commissura hippocampi, commissure of fornix, delta fornicis, hippocampal commissure, psalterium, transverse fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| conjunctival fornix | The space formed by the junction of the bulbar and palpebral portions of the conjunctiva, that of the upper lid being the fornix conjunctivae superior and that of the lower lid the fornix conjunctivae inferior. Synonym: fornix conjunctivae, conjunctival cul-de-sac, retrotarsal fold. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior pillar of fornix | That part of the fornix that rises in a forward curve behind the thalamus to continue forward as the body for fornix ventral to the corpus callosum. Synonym: crus of fornix, posterior pillar of fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crus of fornix | That part of the fornix that rises in a forward curve behind the thalamus to continue forward as the body for fornix ventral to the corpus callosum. Synonym: crus of fornix, posterior pillar of fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tenia of the fornix | The line of attachment of the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricle to the fornix. Synonym: tenia fimbriae, tenia of the fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse fornix | The triangular subcallosal plate of commissural fibres resulting from the converging of the right and left fornix bundles which exchange numerous fibres and which curve back in the contralateral fornix to end in the hippocampus of the opposite side. Synonym: commissura hippocampi, commissure of fornix, delta fornicis, hippocampal commissure, psalterium, transverse fornix. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fornix | Origin: L, an arch. <anatomy> An arch or fold; as, the fornix, or vault, of the cranium; the fornix, or reflection, of the conjuctiva. Esp, two longitudinal bands of white nervous tissue beneath the lateral ventricles of the brain. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| fornix conjunctivae | The space formed by the junction of the bulbar and palpebral portions of the conjunctiva, that of the upper lid being the fornix conjunctivae superior and that of the lower lid the fornix conjunctivae inferior. Synonym: fornix conjunctivae, conjunctival cul-de-sac, retrotarsal fold. (05 Mar 2000) |
