|---|---|---|---|

| fish tapeworm infection | An infection caused by the fish tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium latum, one of the giant tapeworm species. Humans may get infected after eating undercooked fish that contain tapeworm larvae. Fish tapeworms are more common in cold, fresh water lakes such as the Great Lakes area. The adult worm grows in the intestine to lengths up to 30 feet. Segments of the worm and blood may occasionally be passed in the stools. Infection can also lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Diagnosis is via microscopic examination of the stools. Treatment is with single dose niclosamide. (27 Sep 1997) |

| fish tapeworm anaemia | A rare form of macrocytic anaemia associated with Diphyllobothrium latum infection, especially in Finland. Synonym: fish tapeworm anaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |

| african tapeworm | The beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata), the most common of the big tapeworms that parasitises people, contracted from infected raw or rare beef. Can grow to be 12-25 feet (3.6-7.5 m) long in the human intestine. (12 Dec 1998) |
| armed tapeworm | The pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). Contracted from undercooked or measly pork (pork infected with the larval forms of the tapeworm). Can grow to be 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 m) long in the human intestine. Also known as the measly tapeworm. (12 Dec 1998) |

| measly tapeworm | The pork tapeworm, formally known as taenia solium. Contracted from undercooked or measly pork (pork infected with the larval forms of the tapeworm). Can grow to be 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 m) long in the human intestine. Also known as the armed tapeworm. (12 Dec 1998) |

| tapeworm | The tapeworms or cestodes, are ribbon-shaped segmented worms which inhabit the intestinal tract of many vertebrates (including humans). most tapeworm infections occur in Africa, Yugoslavia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Mexico and parts of South America and the U.S.S.R. Some forms may be contracted (in the U.S.) from infected dogs or cats (more common in children) by ingestion of infected fleas. Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) is occasionally encountered in the United States today in immigrants or visitors from endemic areas. Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) is seen more often, especially in those who consume raw beef. Some tapeworms have been known to live up to 20 years and exceed 10 metres in length. Often asymptomatic infestations, but unexplained weight loss, symptoms of pernicious anaemia and the presence of white eggs or ribbon-like segments of worm in stools can be seen in some. (27 Sep 1997) |

| tapeworm, measly | See Taenia solium. The word measly does not imply that this is a puny tapeworm. Measly here refers to meat infested with the larval form of the pork tapeworm (t. Solium). From eating the measly meat, you can acquire the tapeworm. (12 Dec 1998) |
