| first arch syndrome | <syndrome> Generic term including syndrome's of malformations involving derivatives of the first branchial arch, with or without associated malformations; includes mandibulofacial dysostosis, micrognathia with peromelia, otomandibular dystosis, acrofacial dysostosis, and others. | aortic arch | The curved portion between the ascending and descending parts of the aorta; it begins as a continuation of the ascending aorta posterior to the sternal angle, runs posteriorly and slightly to the left as it passes over the root of the left lung, and becomes the descending aorta as it reaches and begins to course along the vertebral column; it gives rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, the left common carotid and left subclavian arteries. Any member of the several pairs of arterial channels encircling the embryonic pharynx in the mesenchyme of the brachial arches; there are potentially six pairs, but in mammals the fifth pair is poorly developed or absent. The first and second pairs are functional only in very young embryos; the third pair is involved in the formation of the carotids; the fourth arch on the left is incorporated in the arch of the aorta; the sixth pair forms the proximal part of the pulmonary arteries. A series of arterial channels encircling the embryonic pharynx in the mesenchyme of the branchial arch's. There are potentially six pairs, but in mammals the fifth pair is poorly developed or absent. The first and second pairs are functional only in very young embryos; the third pair is involved in the formation of the carotids; the fourth arch on the left is incorporated in the arch of the aorta; the sixth pair forms the proximal part of the pulmonary arteries. Synonym: arcus aortae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aortic arch syndrome | <syndrome> Aortic arch syndrome, also referred to by many as vertebral-basilar artery disease, carotid artery occlusive syndrome and subclavian steal syndrome is characterised by a constellation of signs and symptoms which occur secondary to abnormalities in the major arteries which extend off of the aortic arch. These abnormalities are structural and most often secondary to the effects of atherosclerosis, blood clots, trauma or a congenital abnormality. Symptoms of this condition include various neurologic symptoms, reduction in pulse and changes in blood pressure. (27 Sep 1997) |
| aortic arch syndromes | Any of a group of disorders leading to occlusion of the arteries arising from the aortic arch. Such occlusion may be caused by atherosclerosis, arterial embolism, syphilitic or tuberculous arteritis, etc. (12 Dec 1998) |
| right aortic arch | <radiology> Types: mirror image branching (95% most likely to be congenital ht disease), 90% tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) (25%) ** decreased PBF, 2.5% truncus (30-50%) ** increased PBF, 1.5% transposition (TGV) (5%), aberrant left subclavian artery (5% most likely to be congenital heart disease) (12 Dec 1998) |
| double aortic arch | Congenital malformation of the aorta that splits and has a right and a left arch instead of a single arch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| burns, first degree | A first degree burn is superficial and has similar characteristics to a typical sun burn. The skin is red in colour and sensation is intact. In fact, it is usually somewhat painful. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ventriculography, first-pass | Radionuclide ventriculography where a bolus of radionuclide is injected and data are recorded from one pass through the heart ventricle. Left and right ventricular function can be analyzed independently during this technique. First-pass ventriculography is preferred over gated blood pool imaging for assessing right ventricular function. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Mendel's first law | Factors that affect development retain their individuality from generation to generation, do not become contaminated when mixed in a hybrid, and become sorted out from one another when the next generation of gametes is formed. Synonym: Mendel's first law. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mirror, first or front surface | <microscopy> An optical mirror on which the reflecting surface is applied to the front surface of the mirror instead of to the back, that is, to the first surface of incidence. (05 Aug 1998) |
| pregnancy trimester, first | Period of pregnancy from the first day of the last normal menstrual period through the completion of 14 weeks (98 days) of gestation. (12 Dec 1998) |
| healing by first intention | Healing by fibrous adhesion, without suppuration or granulation tissue formation. Synonym: primary adhesion, primary union. (05 Mar 2000) |
| schneiderian first rank symptoms | Those symptom's that, when present, indicate that the diagnosis of schizophrenia is likely, provided that organic or toxic aetiology is ruled out: delusion of control, thought broadcasting, thought withdrawal, thought insertion, hearing one's thoughts spoken aloud, auditory hallucinations that comment on one's behaviour, and auditory hallucinations in which two voices carry on a conversation. Synonym: first rank symptoms, schneiderian first rank symptoms. (05 Mar 2000) |
