| fimbria | Short filamentous structure on a bacterial cell, although flagella-like in structure, generally present in many copies and not involved in motility. Plays a role in adherence to surfaces and in the formation of pellicles. See: pilus. The finger-like projections at the ends of the fallopian tubes which face the ovaries. The fimbria collect released ova and deliver them into the tubes, which then carry the ovum or ova into the uterus. (09 Oct 1997) |
