| fimbria | Short filamentous structure on a bacterial cell, although flagella-like in structure, generally present in many copies and not involved in motility. Plays a role in adherence to surfaces and in the formation of pellicles. See: pilus. The finger-like projections at the ends of the fallopian tubes which face the ovaries.
