| anterior compartment syndrome | <syndrome> Rapid swelling, increased tension, pain, and ischemic necrosis of the muscles of the anterior tibial compartment of the leg, often following excessive exertion. (12 Dec 1998) |

| anterior tibial compartment syndrome | <syndrome> Ischemic necrosis of the muscles of the anterior tibial compartment of the leg, presumed due to compression of arteries by swollen muscles following unaccustomed exertion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| compartment | <biology> In the insect wing, for example: there are two compartments, anterior and posterior, each containing several clones, but clones do not cross the boundary. It seems from studies with homoeotic mutants that cells in different compartments are expressing different sets of genes. The evidence for such developmental compartments in vertebrates is sparse at present. (18 Nov 1997) |
| compartment syndrome | <syndrome> A group of symptoms which indicate a nerve, blood vessel or tendon is being constricted due to swelling within a closed anatomic space. A compartment syndrome may occur in an extremity after trauma (fracture) or inflammation (carpal tunnel syndrome). Some medications can also precipitate this condition. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, pain or loss of movement in an extremity. Surgery may be indicated if symptoms are severe or prolonged. (05 Jan 1998) |
| compartment syndromes | Conditions in which increased pressure within a limited space compromises the circulation and function of tissue within that space. Compartmentation involves mainly the leg but also involved are the forearm, arm, thigh, shoulder, and buttock. Some of the causes of increased pressure are trauma, tight dressings, haemorrhage, and exercise. Sequelae include nerve compression, paralysis, and contracture. (12 Dec 1998) |
| plasmatic compartment | Compartment surrounded by a double biomembrane and containing polynucleotides (e.g., mitochondria). (05 Mar 2000) |
| polyclonal compartment | When the progeny of several cells occupy an area or volume with a defined boundary, it is referred to as a polyclonal compartment, for example clones lying close to the mid line of the wing of Drosophila. (18 Nov 1997) |
| nonplasmatic compartment | Compartment surrounded by a single biomembrane (e.g., vacuoles, lysosomes). (05 Mar 2000) |
| double compartment hydrocephalus | Independent supra-and infra-tentorial hydrocephalus usually due to a veil occlusion of the aqueduct of Sylvius. (05 Mar 2000) |
| circumflex fibular artery | <anatomy, artery> The circumflex fibular branch, a branch of the posterior tibial artery which winds around the neck of the fibula and joins the anastomoses around the knee joint. Synonym: ramus circumflexus fibularis arteriae tibialis posterioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common fibular nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal divisions of the sciatic nerve, diverging from the tibial nerve at the upper end of the popliteal fossa, then coursing with the biceps tendon along the lateral portion of the popliteal space to wind around the neck of the fibula where it divides into the superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The common peroneal nerve, or its deep branch, is the most commonly injured nerve, being located in a lateral subcutaneous position at the fibular neck; a lesion causes a loss of ability to dorsiflex the foot ("foot drop"). Synonym: nervus fibularis communis, nervus peroneus communis, common fibular nerve, lateral popliteal nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| short fibular muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, lower two-thirds of lateral surface of fibula; insertion, base of fifth metatarsal bone; action, everts foot; nerve supply, superficial peroneal. Synonym: musculus fibularis brevis, musculus peroneus brevis, short fibular muscle, short peroneal muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| superficial fibular nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A branch of the common peroneal nerve which passes downward in the lateral compartment of the leg to supply the peroneus longus and brevis muscles and terminate as the intermediate and medial dorsal cutaneous nerves supplying the skin of the dorsum of the foot and toes (except for adjacent sides of great and second toes). Synonym: nervus fibularis superficialis, nervus peroneus superficialis, musculocutaneous nerve of leg, superficial fibular nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep fibular nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the terminal branches of the common peroneal nerve, arising at the fibular neck and passing into the anterior compartment of the leg; it supplies the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and peroneus tertius muscles in the leg, then crosses the ankle joint to supply the muscles on the dorsum of the foot (extensors hallucis and digitorum brevis) becoming cutaneous to innervate adjacent sides of the great and second toes. Synonym: nervus fibularis profundus, nervus peroneus profundus, anterior tibial nerve, deep fibular nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fibular | Relating to the fibula. Synonym: fibularis. Origin: L. Fibularis (05 Mar 2000) |
