|---|---|---|---|

| fibrous tunic of eye | The outer layer of the eyeball composed of the sclera and cornea. Synonym: tunica fibrosa bulbi, tunica externa oculi. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| fibrous tunic of corpus spongiosum | <anatomy> The thick layer of fibrous tissue surrounding the corpus spongiosum penis. It is thinner than the corresponding layer around each corpus cavernosum. Synonym: tunica albuginea corporis spongiosi, fibrous tunic of corpus spongiosum. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| vascular tunic of eye | The vascular, pigmentary, or middle coat of the eye, comprising the choroid, ciliary body, and iris. Synonym: tunica vasculosa bulbi, Haller's tunica vasculosa, tunica vasculosa oculi, uvea, uveal tract. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Bichat's tunic | The tunica intima of the blood vessels. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Brucke's tunic | <anatomy> An older term, formerly used to designate the retina exclusive of the layer of rods and cones. Synonym: Brucke's tunic. (05 Mar 2000) |
| muscular tunic of gallbladder | Muscular tunic of the gallbladder, consisting of layers of smooth muscle fibres coursing in various directions immediately external to the mucosa of the gallbladder. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serous tunic | serous membrane |
| nervous tunic of eyeball | Light sensitive layer of the eye. In vertebrates, looking from outside, there are four major cell layers: (i) the outer neural retina, which contains neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells) as well as blood vessels, (ii) the photoreceptor layer, a single layer of rods and cones, (iii) the pigmented retinal epithelium (PRE or RPE), (iv) the choroid, composed of connective tissue, fibroblasts and including a well vascularised layer, the chorio capillaris, underlying the basal lamina of the PRE. Behind the choroid is the sclera, a thick organ capsule. In molluscs (especially cephalopods such as the squid) the retina has the light sensitive cells as the outer layer with the neural and supporting tissues below. See: retinal rods, retinal cones, rhodopsin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tunic | <botany> Thin membranous or fibrous outer layers of a bulb or corm. (09 Oct 1997) |
| annular part of fibrous digital sheath | One of the two circular fibrous bands of the fibrous sheaths of the fingers and toes attached to the shaft of the proximal and middle phalanges. Synonym: pars annularis vaginae fibrosae, annular pulley, annulus of fibrous sheath, ligamentum annulare digitorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| annulus of fibrous sheath | One of the two circular fibrous bands of the fibrous sheaths of the fingers and toes attached to the shaft of the proximal and middle phalanges. | cardiac fibrous skeleton | A complex framework of dense collagen forming four fibrous rings (annuli fibrosi), which surround the ostia of the valves, a right and left fibrous trigone, formed by connecting the rings, and the membranous portions of the interatrial and interventricular septa; it is found in association with the base of the ventricles, i.e., at the level of the coronary sulcus; its functions include: 1) contributing reinforcement of the valvular ostia while providing attachment for the leaflets and cusps of the valves; 2) providing origin and insertion for the myocardium; and 3) serving as a sort of electrical "insulator," separating the electrically conducted impulses of the atria and ventricles and providing passage for the common atrioventricular bundle of conductive tissue through the right fibrous trigone and membranous interventricular septum. Synonym: cardiac fibrous skeleton, cardiac skeleton, skeleton of heart. (05 Mar 2000) |
| malignant fibrous histiocytoma | <tumour> A deeply situated tumour, especially on the extremities of adults, frequently recurring after surgery and metastasizing to the lungs; shows partial fibroblastic and histiocytic differentiation with a variable storiform pattern, myxoid areas, and giant cells.
