| fibrous hamartoma of infancy | A tumour appearing usually in the upper arm or shoulder in the first two years of life and consisting of cellular fibrous tissue infiltrating the subcutis. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| multiple hamartoma syndrome | Hypertrichosis and gingival fibromatosis from infancy, accompanied by postpubertal fibroadenomatous breast enlargement; papules of the face are characteristic of multiple trichilemmomas. Synonym: multiple hamartoma syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| hamartoma | <oncology, tumour> Tumour like but nonneoplastic overgrowth of tissue that is disordered in structure. Examples are haemangiomas (that include the vascular naevus or birthmark) and the pigmented naevus mole). (18 Nov 1997) |
| hamartoma syndrome, multiple | A hereditary disease characterised by multiple ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal nevoid and neoplastic anomalies. Papules of the face and oral mucosa are the most characteristic lesion. Other changes occur in the skin, in the thyroid, the breast, the gastrointestinal system, and the nervous system. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pulmonary hamartoma | <tumour> Hamartoma of the lung, producing a coin lesion composed primarily of cartilage and bronchial epithelium. Synonym: adenochondroma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy | A benign neoplasm of neuroectodermal origin that most often involves the anterior maxilla of infants in the first year of life. It presents clinically as a rapidly growing blue-black lesion producing a destructive radiolucency; histologically, it is characterised by small round undifferentiated tumour cells interspersed with larger polyhedral melanin-producing cells arranged in an alveolar configuration. Synonym: melanoameloblastoma, pigmented ameloblastoma, pigmented epulis, progonoma of jaw, retinal anlage tumour. (05 Mar 2000) |
| spongy degeneration of infancy | Autosomal recessive degenerative disease of infancy; mostly in Jewish infants; onset typically within first 3-4 months of birth, consisting of blindness, psychomotor regression, enlarged head, optic atrophy, hypotonia, spasticity, increased N-acetylaspartic acid urinary excretion. MRI shows enlarged brain, decreased attenuation of cerebral and cerebellar white matter, and normal ventricles. Pathologically, there is increased brain volume and weight, and spongy degeneration in the subcortical white matter. See: leukodystrophy. Synonym: Canavan's sclerosis, Canavan-van Bogaert-Bertrand disease, spongy degeneration of infancy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| diencephalic syndrome of infancy | <paediatrics> Profound emaciation after initial normal growth, locomotor hyperactivity and euphoria, usually with skin pallor, hypotension and hypoglycaemia. It is usually due to neoplasm involving the anterior hypothalamus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| infancy | Babyhood; the earliest period of extrauterine life; roughly, the first year of life. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transient hypogammaglobulinaemia of infancy | A type of primary immunodeficiency that occurs in infants of both sexes, usually before the sixth month of life, probably resulting from immaturity of lymphoid tissue. Synonym: transient agammaglobulinaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| annular part of fibrous digital sheath | One of the two circular fibrous bands of the fibrous sheaths of the fingers and toes attached to the shaft of the proximal and middle phalanges. Synonym: pars annularis vaginae fibrosae, annular pulley, annulus of fibrous sheath, ligamentum annulare digitorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| annulus of fibrous sheath | One of the two circular fibrous bands of the fibrous sheaths of the fingers and toes attached to the shaft of the proximal and middle phalanges. Synonym: pars annularis vaginae fibrosae, annular pulley, annulus of fibrous sheath, ligamentum annulare digitorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cardiac fibrous skeleton | A complex framework of dense collagen forming four fibrous rings (annuli fibrosi), which surround the ostia of the valves, a right and left fibrous trigone, formed by connecting the rings, and the membranous portions of the interatrial and interventricular septa; it is found in association with the base of the ventricles, i.e., at the level of the coronary sulcus; its functions include: 1) contributing reinforcement of the valvular ostia while providing attachment for the leaflets and cusps of the valves; 2) providing origin and insertion for the myocardium; and 3) serving as a sort of electrical "insulator," separating the electrically conducted impulses of the atria and ventricles and providing passage for the common atrioventricular bundle of conductive tissue through the right fibrous trigone and membranous interventricular septum. Synonym: cardiac fibrous skeleton, cardiac skeleton, skeleton of heart. (05 Mar 2000) |
| malignant fibrous histiocytoma | <tumour> A deeply situated tumour, especially on the extremities of adults, frequently recurring after surgery and metastasizing to the lungs; shows partial fibroblastic and histiocytic differentiation with a variable storiform pattern, myxoid areas, and giant cells. (05 Mar 2000) |
| central fibrous body | <anatomy, cardiology> The fibrous area where the leaflets of the aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves meet in the heart. (05 Mar 2000) |
| perivascular fibrous capsule | A layer of connective tissue ensheathing the hepatic artery, portal vein, and bile ducts as these ramify within the liver. Synonym: capsula fibrosa perivascularis, perivascular fibrous capsule. Connective tissue capsule surrounding the outer surface of the liver, but continuous with septae of some animals which divide parenchyme into lobule, and with the perivascular fibrous capsule at the porta hepatis. Synonym: tunica fibrosa hepatis, Glisson's capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
