| ferrochelatase | <enzyme> An enzyme widely distributed in cells and tissues. It is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and catalyses the formation of haem from protoporphyrin ix and ferrous ions during the terminal step in the haem biosynthetic pathway. Chemical name: Protoheme ferro-lyase Registry number: EC 4.99.1.1 (12 Dec 1998) |

Synonyms : Protoheme Ferro-Lyase, Zinc Chelatase, Chelatase, Porphyrin-Metal, Chelatase, Zinc, Ferro-Lyase, Protoheme, Porphyrin Metal Chelatase, Protoheme Ferro Lyase, Synthetase, Heme
| ferrochelatase |
[EC 4.99.1.1] a mitochondrial enzyme of the lyase class that catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX to form protoheme IX, the heme of hemoglobin. Inhibition of the enzyme in lead poisoning results in accumulation of protoporphyrin IX. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal dominant trait, results in protoporphyria.
