| aminoglycoside | <pharmacology> A group of antibiotics active against many aerobic gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria. They are mostly produced by fungi and contain an amino sugar, and amino-or guanido-substituted inositol ring which are attached by a glycosidic linkage to a hexose nucleus resulting in a polycationic and highly polar compound. They inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to a site on the 30S ribosomal subunit thereby altering codon anticodon recognition. They are all broad-spectrum antibiotics and can cause renal toxicity and ototoxicity. Common examples are streptomycin, gentamicin, amikacin, kanamycin, tobramycin, netilmicin, neomycin, framycetin. | cancer, breast, familial | A number of factors have been identified that increase the risk of breast cancer. One of the strongest of these risk factors is the history of breast cancer in a relative. About 15-20% of women with breast cancer have such a family history of the disease, clearly reflecting the participation of inherited (genetic) components in the development of some breast cancers.
