erythema chronicum migrans The classic initial rash of Lyme disease. In the early phase of the illness, within hours to weeks of the tick bite, the local skin develops an expanding ring of unraised redness. There may be an outer ring of brighter redness and a central area of clearing. For more information, see LYME DISEASE.
(12 Dec 1998)

erythema migrans <clinical sign> A benign condition where there is a map-like appearance to the tongue resulting from irregular denuded patches in the surface (loss of tongue papillae).
Likely secondary to local irritation from hot or spicy foods, alcohol or tobacco. There are no significant complications.
(27 Sep 1997)
erythema nodosum migrans subacute migratory panniculitis
visceral larva migrans A disease, chiefly of children, caused by ingestion of infective ova of Toxocara canis, less commonly by other ascarid nematodes not adapted to humans, whose larvae hatch in the intestine, penetrate the gut wall, and wander in the viscera (chiefly the liver) for periods of up to 18 or 24 months; may be asymptomatic or may be marked by hepatomegaly (with granulomatous lesions caused by encapsulated larvae in the enlarged liver), pulmonary infiltration, fever, cough, hyperglobulinaemia, and sustained high eosinophilia.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous larva migrans <dermatology, microbiology> Also called creeping eruption. This condition results from infection of the human skin by the larvae of the dog and cat hookworm, A. Brasiliense. The result is a red, raised, tunnel on the surface of the skin. Severe itching is common. Beaches and other moist sandy areas are common locations for infection. Thiabendazole is the drug of choice.
(13 Nov 1997)
spiruroid larva migrans Extraintestinal migration by nematode larvae of the order Spiruroidea, not adapted to maturation in the human intestine; caused chiefly by species of Gnathostoma spinigerum and G. Hispidum in Japan and Thailand, following ingestion of uncooked fish infected with encapsulated third-stage infective larvae, and possibly by ingestion of infected copepods (the first intermediate host) in contaminated drinking water; the anteriorly spined larvae produce serpiginous tunnels in the skin or may cause subcutaneous or pulmonary abscess, or may invade the eye or brain.
(05 Mar 2000)
ocular larva migrans Visceral larva migrans involving the eyes, primarily of older children; clinical symptoms include decreased visual acuity and strabismus.
(05 Mar 2000)
erysipelas migrans A widely spreading form involving the entire face or body surface.
Synonym: ambulant erysipelas, wandering erysipelas.
(05 Mar 2000)
keratitis linearis migrans A deep, linear corneal opacity stretching from limbus to limbus; associated with congenital syphilis.
(05 Mar 2000)
larva migrans Infections caused by nematode larvae which never develop into the adult stage and migrate through various body tissues. They commonly infect the skin, eyes, and viscera in man. Ancylostoma brasiliensis causes cutaneous larva migrans. Toxocara causes visceral larva migrans.
(12 Dec 1998)
larva migrans, visceral A condition produced in man by the prolonged migration of animal nematode larvae in extraintestinal tissues other than skin; characterised by persistent hypereosinophilia, hepatomegaly, and frequently pneumonitis, commonly caused by toxocara canis and toxocara cati.
(12 Dec 1998)
acrodynic erythema Pain in the extremities.
(12 Dec 1998)
macular erythema <paediatrics> Also called baby measles. This is a nonserious but common childhood viral infection that starts with a high fever and swollen lymph glands. After 24 hours, the fever breaks and the child develops a red rash on the neck and trunk.
(27 Sep 1997)
Milian's erythema An obsolete term for a nontoxic eruption that simulates measles or a toxic erythema, occurring usually on the ninth day of a course of medication; first described as a reaction to arsenical treatment of syphilis.
Synonym: Milian's disease, Milian's erythema.
(05 Mar 2000)
cold erythema Rash characterised by redness and itching, brought on by exposure to cold.
(05 Mar 2000)
wheal-and-erythema reaction The characteristic immediate reaction observed in the skin test; within 10 to 15 minutes after injection of antigen (allergen), an irregular, blanched, elevated wheal appears, surrounded by an area of erythema (flare).
Synonym: wheal-and-flare reaction.
