| enteric cytopathogenic human orphan virus | eCHO virus |
| enteric cytopathogenic swine orphan virus | A picornavirus isolated from outbreaks of enteritis in swine, but not known to be a natural pathogen. Synonym: enteric cytopathogenic swine orphan virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| respiratory enteric orphan virus | A nonenveloped icosahedral virus whose genome consists of double stranded RNA, belonging to the family Reoviridae, frequently found in both the respiratory and enteric tract. Synonym: REO virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| enteric orphan viruses | Enteroviruses isolated from humans and other animals, "orphan" implying lack of known association with disease when isolated; many virus's of the group are now known to be pathogenic; they include ECBO viruses, ECHO viruses, and ECSO viruses. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cytopathogenic virus | A virus whose multiplication leads to degenerative changes in the host cell. See: cytopathic effect. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mason-pfiser monkey virus | The type species of type d retroviruses (retroviruses, type d) isolated from mammary carcinoma and normal tissues in rhesus monkeys. It appears to have evolved from a recombination between a murine b oncovirus and a primate c oncovirus related to the baboon endogenous virus. Mpmv induces simian aids (saids). (12 Dec 1998) |
| chicken embryo lethal orphan virus | <virology> A virus with characteristics of adenovirus, and similar to quail bronchitis virus. Synonym: chicken embryo lethal orphan virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| green monkey virus | <organism, virology> A filovirus that causes Marburg disease, a severe haemorrhagic fever developed in many people who work with African green monkeys. (18 Nov 1997) |
| monkey B virus | A herpesvirus, in the family Herpesviridae, affecting Old World monkeys, that is very similar morphologically to herpes simplex virus; fatal infection may occur in humans following the bite of an infected monkey, although other modes of transmission have also been documented. Synonym: monkey B virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| orphan virus | <virology> A virus that has not yet beenclassified and linked to a particular disease. (09 Oct 1997) |
| yaba monkey tumour virus | The type species of yatapoxvirus, a tumour-producing DNA virus discovered in monkeys in yaba, nigeria. It has been found to produce histiocytomas in monkeys and humans. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Yaba monkey virus | A poxvirus from the family Poxviridae, distinct from monkeypox virus, that causes Yaba tumours in monkeys. Synonym: Yaba monkey virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cytopathogenic | Pertaining to an agent or substance that causes a diseased condition in cells, in contrast to histologic changes; used especially with reference to effects observed in cells in tissue cultures. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cytopathogenic effect, viral | Visible morphologic changes in cells infected with viruses. It includes shutdown of cellular RNA and protein synthesis, cell fusion, release of lysosomal enzymes, changes in cell membrane permeability, diffuse changes in intracellular structures, presence of viral inclusion bodies, and chromosomal aberrations. It excludes malignant transformation, which is cell transformation, viral. Viral cytopathogenic effects provide a valuable method for identifying and classifying the infecting viruses.
