a treatment for psychiatric disorders using passage of an electric current through the brain via scalp electrodes, conditions being such as to produce a tonic phase similar to that of electroconvulsive therapy but limited or absent convulsions; it is both less effective and more likely to cause side effects than is electroconvulsive therapy.
