| electromagnetic | <physics> Of, Pertaining to, or produced by, magnetism which is developed by the passage of an electric current. Electromagnetic engine, an engine in which the motive force is electromagnetism. Electromagnetic theory of light, a theory of light which makes it consist in the rapid alternation of transient electric currents moving transversely to the direction of the ray. (03 Mar 1998) |
|---|---|
| electromagnetic coupling | <physics> A means of extracting energy from a magnetically confined plasma, where the plasma expands and pushes on the confining magnetic field, causing electrical energy to be generated in the external field-generating circuits. (09 Oct 1997) |
| electromagnetic flowmeter | A flowmeter in which a magnetic field is applied to a blood vessel to measure flow in terms of the voltage developed by the blood as a conductor moving through the magnetic field. (05 Mar 2000) |
| electromagnetic force | <physics> One of the fundamental forces of interaction which influences charged entities. In quantum field theory, the electromagnetic force is mediated by particles of exchange called (virtual) photons. Photons are massless and travel at the speed of light c. The electromagnetic force obeys an inverse square law, which makes sense because it is mediated by particles that have an infinite lifetime (special-relativistically, time stops in a frame moving at c when observed from a non-moving frame). (05 Jan 1998) |
| electromagnetic induction | Electromagnetic waves propagated by induction in an electromagnetic field. (05 Mar 2000) |
| electromagnetic lens | <apparatus> An electromagnet designed to produce a suitably shaped magnetic field for the focusing and deflection of electrons or other charged particles in electron optical instruments (cf. Electrostatic lens.) See: microscope, electron. (05 Aug 1998) |
| electromagnetic radiation | <physics> Radiation (such as radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays) which consists of associated, interacting electric and magnetic field waves which travel at the speed of light. All forms of electromagnetic radiation can be transmitted through vacuum. Electromagnetic waves in plasmas are generally more complex in their behaviour, depending on their frequency. (09 Oct 1997) |
| electromagnetic unit | The unit in an absolute system (CGS) of unit's utilizing the magnetic effects of current; e.g., abampere, abfarad, abhenry, abohm, abvolt. (05 Mar 2000) |
| electromagnetic wave | <physics> A wave of electric and magnetic fields that can move through space. Particles which make up the waves are called photons. (09 Oct 1997) |
| auditory field | The space included within the limits of hearing of a definite sound, as of a tuning fork. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bright field illumination | <microscopy> The method of lighting the specimen with a solid cone of rays. Transmitted bright field illumination is performed by a substage condenser. Reflected bright field illumination is performed by a vertical illuminator. Compare: dark field illumination (05 Aug 1998) |
| bright field imaging | <microscopy> An imaging mode in a transmission electron microscopy that uses only unscattered Electrons to form the image. Contrast in such an image is due entirely to mass-thickness variations in amorphous samples, and may include diffraction contrast in crystalline samples. (05 Aug 1998) |
| bright field microscopy | <technique> Optical microscopy, in which absorption to a great extent and diffraction to a minor extent give rise to the image, as opposed to phase contrast or interference methods of microscopy. (18 Nov 1997) |
| Broca's field | The posterior part of the inferior frontal gyrus of the left or dominant hemisphere, corresponding approximately to Brodmann's area 44; Broca identified this region as an essential component of the motor mechanisms governing articulated speech. Synonym: Broca's area, Broca's field, motor speech centre. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cardioid dark field condenser | <microscopy> A condenser designed with two reflecting surfaces, the first, a spherical surface which reflects the rays to a second, cardioid (heart-shaped) surface. The virtue in such an arrangement is that, if the cardioid surface is of true figure, the lens is both achromatic and aplanatic. It has a limiting numerical aperture of about 1.0. Thus objectives of a greater numerical aperture cannot be used successfully with it. A true cardioid figure is the trace of a point on the circumference of a circle rolling around an equal, fixed circle. (05 Aug 1998) |

| electromagnetic field |
(EM field)--the regions of space near electric currents, magnets, broadcasting antennas etc., regions in which electric and magnetic forces may act. Generally the EM field is regarded as a modification of space itself, enabling it to store and transmit energy.

| electromagnetic field |
A field progated by a combination of electric and magnetic energy that radiates from radio and light waves to gamma and cosmic rays. It is believed that a spirit can manipulate these fields or create their own.

| electromagnetic field |
is the field of force associated with electric charge in motion. It has both electric and magnetic components and contains a definite amount of electromagnetic energy. ELEMENTAL: this is an entity that is not unlike a demonic spirit and is MALEVOLENT by nature causing horrific fear when it appears. It seeks to frighten and bestow evil intentions among the intended victim. It may be seen as beast-like, hairy, foul-smelling, or simply a dark mass/shadow. ...
