||

|---|
| human plasma protein fraction | A sterile solution of selected proteins derived from the blood plasma of adult human donors, containing 4.5 to 5.5 g of protein per 100 ml, of which 83 to 90% is albumin and the remainder is alpha-and beta-globulins; used as a blood volume supporter. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| dried human albumin | A sterile preparation of serum albumin obtained by fractionating blood plasma proteins from healthy persons; used as a transfusion material and to treat oedema due to hypoproteinaemia. Synonym: dried human albumin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dried human serum | Serum prepared by drying liquid human serum by freeze-drying or by any other method that will avoid denaturation of the proteins and will yield a product readily soluble in a quantity of water equal to the volume of liquid human serum from which it was prepared. (05 Mar 2000) |
| human antihemophilic fraction | A lyophilised concentrate of factor VIII, obtained from fresh normal human plasma; used as a haemostatic agent in haemophilia. Synonym: antihemophilic globulin, human antihemophilic fraction. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fraction I protein | <protein> See ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxidase RUBISCO). (18 Nov 1997) |
| normal human plasma | Sterile plasma obtained by pooling approximately equal amounts of the liquid portion of citrated whole blood from eight or more adult humans who have been certified as free from any disease which is tranmissible by transfusion, and treating it with ultraviolet irradiation to destroy possible bacterial and viral contaminants. (05 Mar 2000) |

| distillers' dried grains | (DDGS) The dried byproduct of the grain fermentation process. Typically used as a high-protein animal feed. (05 Dec 1998) |
| dried alum | Alum deprived of its water of crystallization by heat; an astringent dusting powder. Synonym: burnt alum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dried yeast | The dry cells of a suitable strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae; brewers' dried yeast, debittered brewers' dried yeast, or primary dried yeast are the sources of dried yeast; it contains not less than 45% of protein, and in 1 g not less than 0.3 mg of nicotinic acid, 0.04 mg riboflavin, and 0.12 mg thiamin hydrochloride; used as a dietary supplement. (05 Mar 2000) |
| yeast, dried | The dry cells of any suitable strain of saccharomyces cerevisiae or candida utilis. It can be obtained as a by-product from the brewing of beer or by growing on media not suitable for beer production. Dried yeast serves as a source of protein and vitamin b complex. (12 Dec 1998) |
| plasma protein | <haematology> One of the hundreds of different proteins present in blood plasma, including carrier proteins (such albumin, transferrin and haptoglobin), fibrinogen and other coagulation factors, complement components, immunoglobulins, enzyme inhibitors, precursors of substances such as angiotension and bradykinin and many other types of proteins. (14 Oct 1997) |

| aetiological fraction | <epidemiology> The reduction in disease when a risk factor is removed. If I* is the number of people that a risk factor is responsible for and I is the total number of cases over the same period, then the aetiological fraction is I*/I. Equivalently, the aetiological fraction is (I-Io)/I. Where Io is the number of cases in the absence of the risk factor. Also known as the attributable fraction. (05 Dec 1998) |
