| slipped capital femoral epiphysis | <orthopaedics> This refers to chronic fracture of the epiphyseal growth plate known as a slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The capital (head of the femur) should sit squarely on the femoral neck. Abnormal movement along the growth plate results in the slip. Often this condition will present in prepubescent males with an insidious onset of thigh or knee pain with a painful limp. Hip motion will be limited, particularly internal rotation. Consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon is necessary to repair this problem. Untreated cases can result in serious growth abnormalities and permanent disability. (27 Sep 1997) |
| stippled epiphysis | A developmental error of the epiphyses characterised by severe deformities, epiphyses ossified from several discrete centres and with a stippled appearance, and thickened shafts of the long bones; congenital cataract and mental retardation are often present. There is an autosomal dominant form and an autosomal recessive form. Synonym: chondrodysplasia punctata, chondrodystrophia calcificans congenita, hypoplastic foetal chondrodystrophy, stippled epiphysis. (05 Mar 2000) |

Synonym: discus articularis radioulnaris, radioulnar disk, radioulnar articular disk, triangular cartilage, triangular disk of wrist, triquetrous cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |

| distal centriole | The centriole in the developing spermatozoon from which the flagellum develops. Synonym: posterior centriole. (05 Mar 2000) |

| distal end cutter | <dentistry, equipment> A special plier used to cut off the ends of your arch wires. (08 Jan 1998) |
| distal ileitis | A subacute chronic enteritis, of unknown cause, involving the terminal ileum and less frequently other parts of the gastrointestinal tract; characterised by patchy deep ulcers that may cause fistulas, and narrowing and thickening of the bowel by fibrosis and lymphocytic infiltration, with noncaseating tuberculoid granulomas that also may be found in regional lymph nodes; symptoms include fever, diarrhoea, cramping abdominal pain, and weight loss. Synonym: chronic cicatrizing enteritis, Crohn's disease, distal ileitis, regional ileitis, terminal ileitis, granulomatous enteritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
