| angiography, digital subtraction | A method of delineating blood vessels by subtracting a tissue background image from an image of tissue plus intravascular contrast material that attenuates the X-ray photons. The background image is determined from a digitised image taken a few moments before injection of the contrast material. The resulting angiogram is a high-contrast image of the vessel. This subtraction technique allows extraction of a high-intensity signal from the superimposed background information. The image is thus the result of the differential absorption of X-rays by different tissues. (12 Dec 1998) |

| digital subtraction angiography | Computer-assisted roentgenographic angiography permitting visualization of vascular structures without superimposed bone and soft tissue density; images made before and after contrast injection allow subtraction (separation and removal) of opacities not enhanced by the contrast medium. Other image-processing can be performed. Contrast material may be injected intravenously or in lower-than-usual amount intra-arterially. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subtraction | 1. The act or operation of subtracting or taking away a part. 2. <mathematics> The taking of a lesser number or quantity from a greater of the same kind or denomination; an operation for finding the difference between two numbers or quantities. 3. The withdrawing or withholding from a person of some right to which he is entitled by law. Thus the subtraction of conjugal rights is when either the husband or wife withdraws from the other and lives separate without sufficient reason. The subtraction of a legacy is the withholding or detailing of it from the legatee by the executor. In like manner, the withholding of any service, rent, duty, or custom, is a subtraction, for which the law gives a remedy. Origin: L. Subtractio a drawing back. See Subtract, and cf. Substraction. | subtraction technique | Combination or superimposition of two images for demonstrating differences between them (e.g., radiograph with contrast vs. One without, radionuclide images using different radionuclides, radiograph vs. Radionuclide image) and in the preparation of audiovisual materials (e.g., offsetting identical images, colouring of vessels in angiograms). (12 Dec 1998) |
| analog-digital conversion | The process of converting analog data such as continually measured voltage to discrete, digital form. (12 Dec 1998) |
| annular part of fibrous digital sheath | One of the two circular fibrous bands of the fibrous sheaths of the fingers and toes attached to the shaft of the proximal and middle phalanges. Synonym: pars annularis vaginae fibrosae, annular pulley, annulus of fibrous sheath, ligamentum annulare digitorum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| radiography, dental, digital | A rapid, low-dose, digital imaging system using a small intraoral sensor instead of radiographic film, an intensifying screen, and a charge-coupled device. It presents the possibility of reduced patient exposure and minimal distortion, although resolution and latitude are inferior to standard dental radiography. A receiver is placed in the mouth, routing signals to a computer which images the signals on a screen or in print. It includes digitizing from X-ray film or any other detector. (12 Dec 1998) |
| palmar digital veins | Paired venae comitantes of the proper and common digital arteries that empty into the superficial palmar venous arch. Synonym: venae digitales palmares. (05 Mar 2000) |
| recurring digital fibromas of childhood | Multiple fibrous flesh-coloured nodules on the extensor aspect of the terminal phalanges of adjacent digits of infants and young children which often recur after attempted excision, do not metastasize, and may spontaneously regress in two to three years; composed of spindle cells containing cytoplasmic inclusions believed to be derived from myofibrils. Synonym: infantile digital fibromatosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| collateral digital artery | <anatomy, artery> Terminal branches of the common palmar digital artery that pass to the side of each finger. Synonym: arteria digitalis palmaris propria, collateral digital artery, digital collateral artery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common palmar digital artery | <anatomy, artery> One of three arteries arising from the superficial palmar arch and running to the interdigital clefts where each divides into two proper palmar digital arteries. Synonym: arteria digitalis palmaris communis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common palmar digital nerves | Four nerves in the palm that send branches (proper palmar digital nerves) to adjacent sides of two digits; three are branches of the median, one is from the ulnar. Synonym: nervi digitales palmares communes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common plantar digital artery | <anatomy, artery> One of four arteries arising from a superficial plantar arch, when present as a variation. They unite with the plantar metatarsal arteries. Synonym: arteria digitalis plantaris communis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| common plantar digital nerves | Three nerves derived from the medial plantar and one from the lateral plantar that supply the skin overlying the metatarsals and terminate as proper plantar digital nerves to the side of each toe. Synonym: nervi digitales plantares communes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plantar digital veins | Drain the plantar and distal dorsal aspects (nail beds) of the toes and pass back to form four metatarsal veins that in turn empty into the plantar venous arch. Synonym: venae digitales plantares. (05 Mar 2000) |
