pulmonary pleura
| diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis | This represents a group of pulmonary disorders (lower respiratory tract) that leads to a functional loss in the alveolar air sacs and a compromise in the diffusion of oxygen from air to blood. There is widespread inflammation and scar tissue (fibrosis) formation within the lung. The causes are varied and include: inorganic and organic dusts, gases, fumes, vapors, infections, radiation, medications, coal dust, silicosis and byssinosis. When the cause is not identifiable it is referred to as idiopathic diffuse interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (27 Sep 1997) |
|---|---|
| diffuse interstitial fibrosis | Progressive fibrous changes and scarring within the lung tissue, eventually interfering with normal gas exchange. (27 Sep 1997) |
| diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage | <radiology> Thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy, idiopathic pulmonary haemosiderosis, Goodpasture syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, Wegeners granulomatosis, polyarteritis nodosa, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, Behcet disease, D-penicillamine, lymphangiography (12 Dec 1998) |
| interstitial pulmonary fibrosis | <radiology> Idiopathic, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (AKA: usual interstitial pneumonitis), Hamman-Rich syndrome (rapidly progressive), drug-related, collagen-vascular disease, rheumatoid lung disease, scleroderma (12 Dec 1998) |
| diffuse small bowel disease | <radiology> SWELL GAMES, S sprue, dilatation, dilution, moulage, reversal of jejunal and ileal patterns, W Whipple disease, coarse nodular and irregular mucosa, E oedema, L lymphangiectasis, nodular, thickened folds, L lymphoma, nodular, thickened folds, G giardiasis, oedema and spasm of proximal small bowel, A amyloid, symmetric fold thickening, M mastocytosis, look for sclerotic bones, E eosinophilic gastroenteritis, thickened, nodular folds and spasm, S stasis syndromes see: small bowel disease (12 Dec 1998) |
| apical interstitial lung disease | <radiology> A radiological diagnosis where fibrosis is seen in the apices (upper sections) of the lungs. Likely causes include: cystic fibrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, sarcoidosis, silicosis, eosinophlic granuloma, TB and fungus, particularly aspergillus infection. (25 Jun 1999) |
| basilar interstitial lung disease | <radiology> B bronchiectasis, A asbestosis, D drugs / DIP, L lymphangitic metastasis / LAM, A aspiration, S sarcoidosis, S scleroderma (12 Dec 1998) |
| interstitial disease | A disease occurring chiefly in the connective-tissue framework of an organ, the parenchyma suffering secondarily. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interstitial lung disease | <chest medicine> A group of lung disorders which result in scarring and dysfunction of the alveolus (air sac) in the lung. This results in poor oxygen diffusion from the air into the bloodstream. Widespread inflammation in the lung leads to fibrosis (scarring). Causes include chronic exposure to organic and inorganic dusts, fumes, vapors, radiation, medications and certain lung infections. Examples include asbestosis, silicosis, coal worker's pneumoconiosis and diffuse interstitial fibrosis. Smoking increases the risk in all cases. (27 Sep 1997) |
| interstitial lung disease with increased volume | <radiology> Cystic fibrosis (CF), eosinophilic granuloma (EG), lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) (12 Dec 1998) |
| chronic obstructive pulmonary disease | <disease> A progressive disease process that most commonly results from smoking. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is characterised by difficulty breathing, wheezing and a chronic cough. Treatment includes absolute avoidance from smoking, bronchodilators and oxygen for those with advanced disease. Complications include bronchitis, pneumonia and lung cancer. See: emphysema. (27 Sep 1997) |
| pulmonary disease (specialty) | A subspecialty of internal medicine concerned with the study of the respiratory system. It is especially concerned with diagnosis and treatment of diseases and defects of the lungs and bronchial tree. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pulmonary veno-occlusive disease | Obstruction of the small- and medium-sized pulmonary veins by fibrous proliferation of the intima and media or by thrombosis or a combination of both. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cerebral sclerosis, diffuse | Diffuse progressive degeneration of the white matter of the brain, accompanied by mental deterioration, severe motor disturbances, and early death. (12 Dec 1998) |
| goiter, diffuse toxic | Graves' disease, the most common cause of hyperthroidism, too much thyroid hormone. (12 Dec 1998) |
