(Sanskrit) Constituent part, ingredient; an equivalent to mahabhuta (element), the range or plane of primeval matter, five usually being reckoned: kha or akasa (ether); anila (wind); tejas (fire); jala (water); bhu (earth); but esoterically there are seven. "As there are seven Dhatu (principal substances in the human body) so there are seven Forces in Man and in all Nature" (SD 1:290).
