| derepression | <genetics, molecular biology> Anything that stops the repression of a gene thereby allowing expression to occur. (18 Nov 1997) |

| enzyme derepression | Removing or turning off the inhibitor or inhibitors (molecules which repress or prevent other molecules from acting) enzyme so that enzyme activity can resume. (09 Oct 1997) |

| derepression |
removal of repression of an operon, so that gene transcription occurs or is enhanced. In prokaryotes, the mechanism involves inactivation of a repressor, either by inhibition of a corepressor or by the action of an inducer. In eukaryotes, the process appears to involve combinations of regulatory proteins and specific effectors, but has not been elucidated. The net result is frequently elevation of the level of a specific enzyme.
