| dental prosthesis | An artificial replacement for one or more natural teeth or part of a tooth, or associated structures, ranging from a portion of a tooth to a complete denture. The dental prosthesis is used for cosmetic or functional reasons, or both. Dentures and specific types of dentures are also available. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| dental prosthesis design | The plan and delineation of dental prostheses in general or a specific dental prosthesis. It does not include denture design. The framework usually consists of metal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| dental prosthesis repair | The process of reuniting or replacing a broken or worn dental prosthesis or its part. (12 Dec 1998) |
| dental prosthesis retention | The retention of a dental prosthesis in place by design, device, or adhesion. (12 Dec 1998) |
| dental prosthesis, implant-supported | A prosthesis that gains its support, stability, and retention from a substructure that is implanted under the soft tissues of the basal seat of the device and is in contact with bone. (12 Dec 1998) |
| superior dental branches of superior dental plexus | Branches passing from the superior dental plexus to the roots of the teeth of the upper jaw. Synonym: rami dentales superiores plexus dentalis superioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| inferior dental branches of inferior dental plexus | Branches passing from the inferior dental plexus to the roots of the teeth of the lower jaw. Synonym: rami dentales inferiores plexus dentalis inferioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| blood vessel prosthesis | Prosthesis, constructed of either synthetic or biological material, which is used for the repair of injured or diseased blood vessels. (12 Dec 1998) |
| blood vessel prosthesis implantation | Surgical insertion of synthetic or biological material to repair injured or diseased blood vessels. (12 Dec 1998) |
| breast prosthesis | <oncology> An artificial breast form worn under clothing. (16 Dec 1997) |
| cardiac valve prosthesis | See: valve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mandibular guide prosthesis | A prosthesis with an extension designed to direct a resected mandible into a functional relation with the maxilla. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mandibular prosthesis | A prosthetic appliance for the replacement of areas of the mandible missing or defective as a result of deformity, disease, injury, or surgery. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mandibular prosthesis implantation | Surgical insertion of an appliance for the replacement of areas of the mandible. (12 Dec 1998) |
| maxillofacial prosthesis | A prosthetic appliance for the replacement of areas of the maxilla, mandible, and face, missing as a result of deformity, disease, injury, or surgery. When the prosthesis replaces portions of the mandible only, it is referred to as mandibular prosthesis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| maxillofacial prosthesis implantation | Surgical insertion of an appliance for the replacement of areas of the maxilla, mandible, and face. When only portions of the mandible are replaced, it is referred to as mandibular prosthesis implantation. (12 Dec 1998) |
| penile prosthesis | Rigid, semi-rigid, or inflatable cylindric hydraulic devices, with either combined or separate reservoir and pumping systems, implanted for the surgical treatment of organic impotence. (12 Dec 1998) |
| periodontal prosthesis | Any restorative and replacement device that is used as a therapeutic aid in the treatment of periodontal disease. It is an adjunct to other forms of periodontal therapy and does not cure periodontal disease by itself. (boucher's clinical dental terminology, 3d ed) (12 Dec 1998) |
| cochlear prosthesis | An electronic device implanted under the skin with electrodes in the middle ear on the promontory or cochlear window or in the inner ear in the cochlea to create sound sensation in total sensory deafness. A microphone behind the ear feeds sound waves into a microprocessor carried on the body, which analyzes the data and sends information back to a radio transmitter that triggers the electrodes in the middle or inner ear to produce the appropriate electrical pulses. This does not enable the patient actually to hear, but rather to distinguish different sounds according to the neural sensation they produce. The first successful cochlear implant was performed in 1978 in Melbourne, Australia. Such devices are among many implanted aids which have been made possible by the advent of microchip technology. Synonym: cochlear prosthesis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| heart valve prosthesis | An artificial substitute for a heart valve. It may be mechanical or composed of tissue. (12 Dec 1998) |
